No prob. It's a very cool old building, spartan but classy looking. It reminds me of the look of Gotham in the old Batman cartoons.

I would call VGH more of a campus. To be more precise, it's the Pattison Pavilion, completed in the 90's.

Take out the Science Centre and that shot of the Broadway corridor could have had me fooled for the Victoria skyline.

That train track with the pine trees gives the city a very ''rocky mountain'' feel - so to speak. I like it.

Well we are in the foothills (Downtown/Northeast/Southwest are transition zones, West northwest half is part of the foothills) so I guess it makes sense! The West LRT gives fantastic views of the city, especially the Bow Trail and elevated sections.

I really like that last Calgary pic. Is that the Deerfoot or Stoney Trail?

Neither, it is Bow Trail.

Stoney is the ring road, which doesn't come near the inner city, and Deerfoot is a couple km outside of downtown, cutting through the east side of the city. The only expressway that goes right into/through the inner city is Crowchild Trail. Bow Trail is more of a limited access arterial road, with a high speed limit. However, even Crowchild has 4 lit intersections in a 2 km stretch just north of the Bow Trail interchange.

Edit: Wow, what a tangent I went on! Well, it's good for you to know, since you're moving to the province!

It looks really urban. Calgary is developing quite the freeway network. It'll be interesting to see the greenfields surrounding the freeways develop over the next few years as companies will want to be as close as possible.

We're not developing our inner city freeway network at all. Traffic control here is a joke, intersections are even still on timers, we don't have a grid control system or sensors, just timers. It's crazy!

Read my edited above post about the freeways. There are only three, maybe four highways in Calgary. Deerfoot Trail (Queen Elizabeth Highway, Highway 2, also known as the Calgary Edmonton Corridor), Stoney Trail (suburban ring highway, 3/4 complete), Crowchild Trail (section between University and Memorial becomes arterial road with 4 intersections, becoming a highway again after Kensington Road), and Glenmore Trail (crosstown connector between Crowchild and Deerfoot in the southern half of the city)

Here's a pic of the skyline from the northwest, looking down Crowchild Trail, about 12 km from DT.

Good to know. I'll be driving through Calgary en route to Edmonton next month, pretty eager to check out the network for myself. Edmonton has a pretty decent network itself. Between Yellowhead, Whitemud and the Henday it gets the job done it seems. So the question becomes, which ring road will.get completed first: Henday or Stoney?

Henday's final segment is already under construction, I think to be complete by 2016 or 2017. Stoney Trail still has the issue of wanting to cut through the reserve just west of the city limits so unless something recently occurred that I'm unaware of, Stoney Trail's completion is on hiatus.

The interesting thing with Edmonton is that it lacks a true north-south freeway outside of the ring road and Calgary lacks a true east-west freeway outside of the ring road.

Lol, when I visited I had a bunch of people boasting about the Henday. Edmontonians and Calgarians are (justifiably) very proud of their cities' rapid growth.

You must not have heard then, SW Stoney Trail has been approved by all parties, including the Tsuu Tina Nation. They are going ahead with the original 2009 alignment plan thankfully It will have the capacity to be expanded to a 16 lane expressway by 2036. I'm not sure when construction will begin though, but planning is complete.

Calgary has Glenmore Trail which is grade separated between Sarcee Trail in the West, all the way to Sheppard Road in the East, a distance of about 14 kilometers. I'd call that a true east-west freeway. I believe it will eventually be separated all the way between SW Stoney and SE Stoney, making it 100% separated through the city, right now it just goes back to intersections in the industrial SE. Unfortunately, although most of Crowchild Trail is grade-separated, the portion near Kensington/University isn't, so it's technically not a North - South Freeway, but functionally it is. Deerfoot is 100% separated through the city though.

I can't divulge many details, but the survey for the SW Ring Road is underway.

Most major roads have sensors now, some mounted under the roadway and some mounted on top of traffic lights. There is a traffic control centre that can manipulate the lights at most major intersections when traffic gets too backed up or if there is an accident. http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation/Roads/Pages/Traffic/Traffic-management/Traffic-management.aspx

Oh okay, it still doesn't seem like it though.

No idea why, but I love this picture! So much variety!
