This is part of the strategic plan for LAX AC base in general and the YYC-LAX route in particular. By pulling down the importance of YYC-LAX it improves the importance of YVR.

Back in the two hop to SYD with the 763, LAX was an attractive alternative especially in J class. AC spilled J revenue over to UA. Once AC got the 77L an launched YVR-SYD nonstop, the late YYC-LAX flight was retimed to misconnect with UA LAX-SYD. The morning YYC-LAX has been dropped so as to misconnect the TPAC flights, traffic is now patterned over to YVR. To put it another way, part of YYC-NRT came from YYC-LAX/SFO-NRT or Asia.

Oh is that mainline now? It was CRJ for years. I've gone through YVR to avoid that UA flight. I remember the good old days when SFO was E190 on AC.

Thanks for that. I guess it makes sense for them on a business sense, as annoying as it is. I support the NRT flight over connecting in YVR on NRT, HKG, Or ICN if i can scheduling wise... but if heading deep SE Asia have been connecting to SIN in LAX. The ANA J class domestic Asia to deep SE Asia is a long flight still.

No UA mainline from YYC-SFO this summer. However UA had to cut capacity through SFO as the airport is required to shutter 2/4 runways while the new emergency aircraft arresting system is installed at the end of 01/19 runways.

Oh ya, thanks for reminding me.. I am going to be the guy who will insistently ask if yyc will build official spotting areas. Heck I will even print off reference pictures to wave to Jody's face haha. I am preparing a short informal presentation to explain the merits of supporting the recreation of enjoying aviation by building facilities to accommodate plane spotters, visitors, and local families all alike so to create yyc as a destination not for travel and shopping but for recreation as well to get the family out to enjoy airplanes on a nice sunny day. Not to mention additional eyes for vigilance..

Some very interesting bits tonight, more details of how the air space redesign was done to accommodate the new runway. I think it is kinda crappy IMO because arriving traffic will be split between the east and west runways to catch a particular arrival from either of the direction of flight originating from. I would have to drive across the airfield to the other side to spot a pacific arrival and then drive back to get the atlantic arrival. However departures will be in the same manner so I guess it is like getting 50% share of the airport traffic in this config and perhaps more predictability with certain destined flights always using one parallel all the time. I guess the existing spots will still have its use.
This one middle aged fat mid eastern dude kept chiming in and asking dumb questions wasting much of our time, man one instance he was questioning how pilots would be able to tell which of the parallel runways they would be landing on and would go on and on, I don't think he has a clue with knowing the basics of how airports and traffic management works. He was questioning even one of the managers of Nav Canada who was doing the presentation. Are you sure this is safe? How do you know this works? How can the pilots tell when I can't?

ON a pleasing note, they are in preliminary design for spotting areas and are working with the city to create a pathway network running alongside the new parallel and 36st and much of the terrain will be elevated throughout its full length above the fence line and on the west side they are planning to utilize an existing mound that was used to pile dirt during earth work to make a viewing platform where you can access off 96st just before the tunnel. I have also persuaded them to look into creating another viewing spot or a simple raised mound on the west side of 35R about 1500' offset from the threshold and they said they will look into that.
I have prepared a spotting dossier that I showed them containing example spots of other airports around the world and they have told me to email it right away. So we'll see if I have any pull in making this happen...

Otherwise we have an asian carrier coming indeed soon enough, definitely this year.. Maybe when Telus sky starts digging.
Overall very informative and I felt like the only plane geek in attendance jittering with excitement, YYCAA appeared to recognize my knowledge of yyc and airport operations in general. At least I was asking the right questions..
Oh and next year they will do trials for the new IFP and will solicit a few thousand volunteers to use the facilities while they test out the system. They are also talking with AC about christening the new rwy opening so fingers are crossed..

It was a very interesting presentation. The planning consultants did a presentation to the Calgary Planners Lunch and Learn a number of years ago as they were gearing up for the project and had said that swing gates (which help airlines with more efficient operation/utilization of aircraft) were not included in the design. I was pleased to hear that when I asked the question tonight they had changed the design and included them - when they spoke at the lunch, I expressed concern about how some of the foreign flights (like AC's Tokyo flight) might work because at the time it was scheduled as NRT-YYC-YYZ.

Interesting Bokimon. I was under the impression that runway use would have to do more with wind direction and the fact the runways are staggered in relation to the terminal. By that I mean one would be used primarily for arrivals and one for departures depending on if they were landing north or south.

I think it's better for everybody (except the airlines' wallets due to unnecessarily long taxi)

Spotting at somewhere like ATL you never know if KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, BA are coming in on the north or south side. It's seemingly random. YYC, they'll all be the east side. Always. Pretty easy enough.

The second Air Canada 788, 802 C-GHPT also out of paint hanger, but C-GHPQ still didn't make its first flight yet (may be due to wing crack fixes).

BTW there was a IL76( AZS7002) came in last night and left this morning to YVR. See tweets from WeeinYYC, WSBobo and AtcBurly.

(1) I pulled an arrival and departure list from summer 2013 and mocked up what each runway activity would look like. There are some surprises WRT areas where one runway would be very busy while the other is deserted. For example late evening departures to east (redeye) mix with the eastern arrivals while the western side is a ghost town. Unable to put private aircraft into the mix due to lack of data. I suspect that over time traffic migration will transfer to one runway for all arrivals and one for all departures, especially during the busy periods.

(2) Its getting a little late in the winter 2014/15 announcement season for Asian flights to not be announced. Also the number of new airlines into YVR is rapidly shortening the list of potentials.

That said I hope this does not become a nonevent announcement along the lines of Korean summer inbound charters.

(3) Hey shut yer trap about the facility trials/tests. These events are hugely oversubscribed and sell out quickly. No need for advertisements.

In my opinion the only serious potentials for asian airlines into YYC, are either KE or CA, and maybe HU, just because they already have the 788.

If we see an announcement for a summer season start then it would have to come in the next few weeks, and that would be for a July start at earliest. I agree with you, I would love to see scheduled service instead of the charters we had in the past, even if on a seasonal basis.

Rumoured for many months. My source who has been so far very accurate states this is the "shared" Asian service not by AC.

And for the Mickey jet followers here's the bird arriving CUN a while back.

Landed at YYC from YYZ this afternoon and have never seen so many widebodies there.
KLM A330
AC 77W (FRA?)
AC 767(NRT?) and an AC A330 (LHR?)
It was pretty cool!

Correct on all counts, the 767 arrived from NRT and turned to OGG.
