Doesn't really say why 2 floors were removed. It does say that there was a lawsuit concerning the rental value of the 3rd and 4th floor:
"In the suit of Priscilla Paul Jennings vs. the Utah National Bank, for rent for the Eagle Emporium block, the defendant filed an answer yesterday, in which it is claimed that a change in the stairway of the building in 1891 reduced the rental value of the third and fourth stories $125 per month."

Also says that the 2 story building there now was a remodel when a new bank took over the site. They used the same basic structure as the old building minus the top two floors."

"Mr. Badger remarked that when the interior of the old structure was being torn out, the bank was widely criticised for not tearing down the whole thing, and beginning anew. But the salvage of the walls and skeleton structure of the old Jennings block saved the bank some $40,000 and the building to all appearances is entirely new. (28 Feb 1917 Des News)"

Mayor McAdams stated that we, (Salt Lake City/County and the Salt Palace) lost 30 conventions last year due to not having a CCH. It's nice to see Adobe joining the ranks saying that a CCH, and more convention space, is sorely needed. I don't anticipate that with 30 missed conventions that the "contingency fund" will ever be needed.

Does anyone know what is going on across the street from the 600 west apartments that are being constructed?

Im talking about the vacant land between The Bridges and Cityfront apartments. The area is all fenced off and now there is heavy equipment digging.. I wonder if they are adding another apartment building.. That will be nice if so.

Now they just need to demolish that ugly house / collapsed business on the SE corner of 600W and N Temple and put something useful on the corner. the NW corner across the street might be a good place for a gas station or something.

Then they need to get some nice tenants in the old biomatt.. I wish radio shack would move there so they could rip all the garbage on the SW corner of 900 West and N temple down.

On a side note.. it looks like that ugly ass virgin marry billboard on the 600 west apartments will be facing North Temple.. I thought it would be facing 600 west for some reason... This is even worse.. Now I will have to look at it every time I drive down North Temple... I hope someone builds another apartment building next to it and blocks it.. ;/

We talked about this last month:

Also, the mural on the 600 West apartments is not going to be Mary, again, that image was used because the developer wanted that artist to paint the mural. He would not paint the same thing that is already on another building in Salt Lake. The same artist painted this mural in the adobe building in Lehi.

Thanks for the info! Looking at historic photos is always such a two-edged sword; fun but also disappointing because of what we've lost.

"McAdams expects the hotel convention to be built by 2017"

With that info giving that a building that size could take anywhere from 24-36 months to build we could see a ground breaking by the end of THIS year, if not this time next year. Sounds like it's coming.

Yeah. But that's Utah Time. So, 2017 will most likely be 2027.

I seriously doubt that it will be 2027. Now that it's made it to this juncture, I think closer to 2017/2018 is a more accurate date.

So glad that they're reusing the old Zim's building on State. ...anyone know if they're using the whole building, or just the main floor?

Utah time like all the rail projects that are supposed to be completed in 2015, that were actually completed in 2012?

Joke, guys.

But if you want to get serious, no, like a great deal of true major development (not public works projects) - anything from Hamilton Partners to even the City Creek development which had been originally proposed all the way back in 2002 or 2003.

I mean, would any of you be surprised if this project wasn't developed by 2017? Of course not.

I agree with Comrade. By the time they pick a developer, a site, and an architect, this could very well take a year or more depending on the developer and site procurement situation. Then another one or two years for design review, & construction documents. Then another two years for construction. I give this 2018 at the very earliest. They could speed things up if they do this as a fast track process and start building the foundations, etc. while the rest of the building design, details, etc. are finalized. We also have to recognize that there could very possibly be law suits against the state that will stall this. Portland is facing that problem right now.

Take heart kermit! We have some great photoshoppers here that will put the new CCH (cause the rendering with come sooner than later) in the skyline from multiple different angles. We will be able to stare at those to our hearts content!

I estimate that the RFP will include some of the following: How much square footage, or at least a range, of convention space the county wants, and what type of convention space.

Suggested location and the plan for acquisition of the parcels.

And preliminary design for the project.

I would venture to guess that the RFP that gets selected will already have a purchase option on the property that they are proposing.

I don't expect the County to select a developer that can't meet their time line of 2017.

What is the lawsuit that is currently occurring in Portland?

I also think current convention's warnings about lack of rooms and the lure of new/missed opportunities will drive this.. Adobe, Comic-Com, OR and others have all stated concerns about the current situation. The writing is on the wall.

The carrot for investors is there. I don't see this getting stuck in the mud, the demand is overdue.
