Lady Bird Lake area among possible sites for Erwin Center replacement

Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer- Austin Business Journal

There appear to be four possible sites in the greater Austin area that could accommodate the replacement for the University of Texas’ Frank Erwin Center, with land currently occupied by the Austin American-Statesman on Congress Avenue appearing to be the most hospitable location.

Capacity of 25,000 and costing north of $200 million......

I really like those new Waller Center renderings. They put it within its real surroundings, even going as far as including the parking lot next door and the construction barricade thingamajigs that are on the site. To me, this is a sign that they're serious about this project. The blue glass on the second rendering looks really cool and I like the way that the retail runs parallel down Cesar Chavez now.

Consider me much more encouraged by this project.

Edit: I just realized that they're calling it Waller Park Place now.

Some update on the Fairmont:
Quote:
The development of the Fairmont Austin downtown appears to be on track with Tuesday's announcement that Hunt Construction Group has been awarded the $247 million construction contract. The total value of the 47-story project to be built at Cesar Chavez and Red River streets is $370 million.

Developer Manchester Texas Financial Group LLC picked Hunt because of a previous track record, according to a statement. Hunt oversaw construction for two other projects Manchester’s parent company built in San Diego — the San Diego Marriott Marquis Hotel and Marina and the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. “Trust means a great deal to our family, and our successful history with the Hunt Construction Group gives us great confidence in the firm’s ability to once again deliver an outstanding hotel,” said Douglas F. Manchester, founder and chairman of Manchester Financial Group in the statement.

Indianapolis-based Hunt also is a partner with DPR Construction, formerly Hardin Construction, in the construction of the JW Marriott Austin, which is more than half-way completed at the corner of Second Street and Congress Avenue. Its 1,012 rooms are scheduled to be delivered in spring 2015. No date was given for groundbreaking or when the 1,000-room Fairmont Austin will be delivered. Originally, the hotel was scheduled to break ground in November 2013, after facing some permitting hurdles.

There's also 70 Rainey Street which is rumored to be 30 floors. Plus the Hotel Van Zandt which is already under construction.

New 7th & Congress aka Aloft Austin Downtown. I'm x-posting from the Austin subforum because we need to post new renderings and announcements here since it's a more visible/high-traffic forum.

FWIW, I doubt they're worried about the market considering they're such a huge hotel chain. It's probably more about market participation and brand recognition for them than anything else. It helps to get hotels in popular vacation destinations. People who are familiar with your brand/name are more likely to stay at your hotel when they go on other vacations.

That is just lovely. Does anyone think it will really be (looks like) 29 stories tall? Thanks for posting it here Syndic. The color and some of the architectural features make me think of the design for the new Westin on 5th.

It's 33 stories. Why would you doubt the height?
