Denver's Hyatt for example is not directly connected but it's literally 50 feet away door to door and a tiny walk across the street. Seamless.

I agree with your overall point though.

Convention attendees don't want to go out into the cold, snow, rain, etc. to get between the venues. Many people have to go back and forth a lot for meetings between convention space and hotel meeting space quickly. Having to go outside impedes that. One meeting planner told me they won't even consider a city that doesn't have a direct connection.

Question for anyone that can answer it. I have a good friend moving to SLC from Boston in a couple weeks. She was wondering where the good places to live are in SLC. She is looking along the lines of an apartment. Some other background info on what she is looking for is, young adult area, not too far from downtown, easy to get around without a car, clean area, and close to a market or grocery store.

I didn't know when she asked me because I've only been back in SLC for about 5 months.

I like a lot of the apartments on South Temple/1st Ave area, west of 300 E. I lived in the Hillcrest Apartments on 1st and A St. when I moved back from NYC. You can walk downtown, the buildings have character.

My first pick, if she's just starting out here, would be in the Avenues. There are apartments up there that fit all of those criteria. I lived there for a while, absolutely loved it.

Another option would be Sugar House as there are 3 large apartments under construction now with one of them opening up there soon. I also wouldn't doubt 1 or 2 more starting up here in the next 6-9 months in that area. Sugar House has become a hip place to live in Salt Lake with easy access to downtown and very walkable. Not sure on the grocery store options there but with all the housing going in the area I would guess there is one close by.

Smiths is a block and a half from SH Crossing and Liberty whatever.

Definitely the southwestern Avenues, as others have said. Or northern Central City, which is super charming and underrated. You have a Smith's and Harmons in close proximity, and you can easily walk or bike to/from downtown if transit isn't running. Takes ten or fifteen minutes to bike to FrontRunner, which is an awesome amenity.

Sugar House is also nice, but the streetcar and bus both stop running at 9 pm (the bus used to run until 1 am just a few years ago, mind you). You're not as in the middle of it all as you are in the lower Aves.

I second the votes for lower Aves or Central City. Anything from State to 700 East south to 900 South. There are several nice, new apartment options (though not architecturally!) along 400, 500 and 600 East.

This is more along the lines of how I would like to see the development of the area go... there could even be a bit more convention space on the SE corner of West Temple and 100 South (if need be).

Looks like some pretty well thought out ideas. Good luck getting rid of the Shilo however lol! I think a Movie Theater would be great in that area but I would like to see a tall tower on top of it.

Aaaaa....Of course, everybody understands that the Shilo was recently sold and is about to undergo a major renovation inside and out...right?

The Shilo isn't going anywhere, and according to the new owners will not be recognizable when completed. GOOD RIDDANCE!

I remember someone posted something about that a little while back. Hopefully they turn it into something we can all be proud of! I know a lot of people dislike the red lights and it does admittedly make it look like an old cheap Las Vegas Hotel but I think I will actually miss those ugly red lights just for the fact that it gave some life to the night sky.

I hear ya Skystruck. The fact that the new owners said we won't recognize it, gives us hope they'll do something cool with the exterior. Hopefully, they will do something as dramatic as the change of the old Zions Tower, and not just a plastering/spraying of new stucco.

I like this idea. I actually would like the bowling where the theater is...and I guess I would be okay with a thin sky bridge there.
