The Huntsville city limits include the northeast corner of the 565-65 interchange, so this development would border HSV. HSV needs some development out towards 65 to offset the costs of the utilities and other infrastructure cost that have been expended.

So there's a big rivalry between Hunstville and Decatur, eh? I wonder how this will play out. When you go to Bass Pro's website and pull up the store map you can mouse over each location and it gives you details to the right. Each Alabama location is in a suburb and it gives the larger metro city name its due by putting it in parentheses so people from beyond the area have a better chance of finding it from the larger name recognition. Will Decatur get the single billing like the company's Macon store or will it be considered a Huntsville metro store?

Decatur's future orange star isn't up...yet.

The lobby of the new downtown Homewood Suites by Hilton was packed this morning to commemorate the grand opening of the first business to launch at the $100 million Twickenham Square urban center in downtown Huntsville.

The four-story Homewood Suites began serving guests March 7, but today marked the formal opening of the 101-suite extended stay hotel. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, Madison Mayor Troy Trulock, Chamber of Commerce officials and others were in attendance.

Homewood Suites, which was developed by Opelika-based PHD Hotels, is just a few steps away from Huntsville Hospital and has amenities ranging from a workout room and swimming pool to an on-site 24/7 convenience store and meeting facility.

I'm not trying to make it seem like there is a rivalry between the cities. My beef is more in the direction of people who don't understand relationships between cities, not just Huntsville and Decatur.

Decatur never has been and never will be a suburb of Huntsville. It's relationship to Huntsville is more like that of Durham to Raleigh (completely different metros that join to create a larger region).

If we're talking about what it would be labeled as, I'd guess it would one of the following: Decatur; Huntsville/Decatur; Limestone County (Huntsville/Decatur). Considering that the City of Decatur is the one doing the dealing with Bass Pro, and considering that Decatur is footing a $64 million bill for it, that it will either be billed as a Decatur store or a Huntsville/Decatur store. Airlines generally recognize HSV as being a Huntsville/Decatur airport so it would make sense that Bass Pro would also follow that convention.

There really aren't an examples of this situation. In looking through the location map I couldn't really find a situation where a location existing in the core city of one metro area that also had annexed land in another, larger metro. I guess we won't know until the city council approves the deal (assuming they do).

It's not in town, but still pretty cool.

Construction is underway on the Talladega Marksmanship Park, a project of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). The $20 million state of the art shooting range is to open March of 2015.

The centerpiece of the project is a fully electronic scoring system on a rifle range features yardage positions at 200-300-600 yards on a terraced site.

Dunkin in Jones Valley

Legacy Marketplace, which is across from the Target shopping center and beside Kohl's Department Store, is near Legacy at Jones Farm, a gated 500-unit luxury apartment complex that is currently under construction.

The new 9,600-square-foot retail center on 2785 Carl T. Jones Drive will welcome Dunkin' Donuts, Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, RadioShack and Nails 4 U by late May, according to a post on Crunkleton & Associates' blog site.

NASA's Super Guppy in town making a delivery

from WAFF

A new fuel tank called a composite cryogenic fuel tank was the cargo.

The tank landed at Redstone Arsenal by way of NASA's Super Guppy
which hasn't landed in the Rocket City since 2007.

Tests will be done on the fuel tank at Marshall Space Flight Center.
The fuel tank is far a new heavy lift rocket meant for deep space travel.

The Shoppes at John Hunt Park

New Huntsville shopping center has a name -- The Shoppes at John Hunt Park -- but city, developer hammering out other details

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Huntsville officials say plans to sell a prime 25-acre slice of John Hunt Park to a shopping center developer remain on track.

A proposed development agreement between the city and Nashville-based GBT Realty was pulled from last week's Huntsville City Council agenda. But Shane Davis, city director of urban development, said he expects the contract to come up for a vote at the council's April 10 meeting.

"Everything is the same – the price of the land, the number of acres, the minimum square footage to be developed in the first phase," Davis told AL.com Tuesday.

In July 2013, the city announced GBT had been selected as preferred developer for the coveted 25-acre commercial site on the edge of John Hunt Park near the busy Airport Road-Memorial Parkway interchange.

GBT agreed to pay $8.2 million for the property. The city has said it will use the money to improve John Hunt Park - site of Huntsville's first airport -- and buy 140 acres along Triana Boulevard for a future outdoor sports complex.

The development deal, which spells out the responsibilities of both GBT and the city, has taken several months to write. Once it is approved by the council, said Davis, GBT can get to work on detailed blueprints and recruiting tenants for what the company is calling "The Shoppes at John Hunt Park."

A site plan on GBT's website shows nine restaurant and commercial storefronts, ranging from 6,000 to 62,000 square feet, plus six outparcels totaling 8.52 acres along Airport Road and the southbound Parkway access road. The largest outparcel is currently home to a long-closed Copeland's of New Orleans restaurant.

There would be a single entrance to the shopping center from the Parkway access road and two from Airport Road, drawings show.

Davis said he expects the land sale to be completed in early November. "That means we would probably see construction in the first quarter of 2015," he said.

GBT operates shopping centers across the Southeast, including the Target-anchored Shoppes of Madison on U.S. 72 West and Westside Center on University Drive. It also developed the new Academy Sports at Strong Station on U.S. 72.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. RadioShack isn't doing so hot, hopefully this location will serve them well.

And it is about time Jimmy John's opens a location in South Huntsville!

There is currently a Jimmy John's on Airport Road in the TJ Maxx shopping center...

I take it they are just going to move this one or do they plan on 2 locations in South Huntsville?

I was thinking two locations, one for the Hospital lunch crowd and one for the afterschool/dinner crowd. But nobody seems to remember that the one on Airport is there, so they could close that one...

And I am actually pretty excited that Radio Shack is going to Jones Valley as long as they still have a section for the maker comunity and not just a cellphone store.

If I were running GBT Realty, I would be pissed. $100 per year versus paying $8mil.
The downtown land is worth at least double per square, our city management is strikingly bad.

City Strikes Deal With Downtown Developer, Leases Land for $100 A Year

The city will lease the land to Sealy for only $100 a year for 50 years, and $120,000 each year after that. The deal may sound remarkable, but it actually serves to benefit the city.
