Kimball Art Center unveils expansion plans

Get ready for a new look to Park City’s historic Old Main Street, as the Kimball Art Center unveiled plans for a major expansion Monday.

The expansion — set to start construction in 2015, pending approval from Park City’s planning commission — will nearly double the center’s existing space, from 15,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet, at the center’s home at the corner of Main Street and Heber Avenue.

"It will be a real draw to Main Street, as Park City becomes more and more of a year-round destination" said Robin Marrouche, executive director of Kimball Art Center.

The planned expansion will add more than 9,000 square feet of museum and exhibition space, more space for social gathering and administrative offices, a 4,000-square foot "Children’s Interactive Discovery Center," a 3,000-square-foot education studio, and expanded support areas.

Cost of the expansion will be determined after approval from the city, Marrouche said.

The expansion plans were designed by the Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), which was named "Innovator of the Year" for architecture in 2001 by The Wall Street Journal. The local architect on the project is Park City’s Elliott Workgroup.

The expansion plays off the old auto garage that became the Kimball Art Center in 1976. The design is a striking gray wedge, lifting skyward at the corner of Main and Heber to reveal a long street-level window into the space inside.

Bjarke Ingels, founding partner of BIG, said in a statement that "the building seems to rise with Main Street and the mountain landscape, while bowing down to match the scale of the existing Kimball."

Ingels added that the upper gallery opens up the roof deck of the former Kimball Bros. garage, creating an outdoor exhibition and event space with the Wasatch Mountains as a backdrop.

The wedge design tops out at 46 feet, smaller than the ambitious 80-foot twisted log-cabin building — also designed by Bjarke Ingels Group — that Kimball Art Center had been considering in 2012. Kimball officials never submitted that plan to the city, but city planners had voiced opposition to waiving height restrictions in Park City’s Old Town.

Craig Elliott, architect for Elliott Workgroup, said in a statement that the wedge design "will be come a jewel within the strand that is Historic Park City."

Huh, so they decided not to go with the originally announced design by Bjarke Ingels?

Good to see this significant project back on track. Looks like they went with the same firm, but had them redirect the design to match the more intimate scale of the current surroundings.

Was also glad to see this project at the top of Main getting a much needed facelift. This, along with what has been accomplished in recent years, and now the remake of the old Field's Mall is really cementing Main Street's appeal. Now, if only they will give that albatross peaking through on the right in the pick below a complete makeover. I think that will be the only remaining property on Main that screams 60's crap.

Todd Cusick, the manager of a firm that has acquired three Main Street properties, shows a historic photo of the Star Hotel on his smartphone during a Wednesday visit to the building, sitting across Main Street. His firm also acquired the Imperial Hotel, on the left. Jay Hamburger/Park Record

Ya, I bet some of the design competition losers are pissed. Why didn't they stick with the twisted log cabin design. Money? Constructability issues?

There was a huge backlash in Park City regarding the horizontal and especially vertical massing size of the former design. Parkites felt it overwhelmed it's surroundings. Kind of like how we feel about the design of a Phoenix style CCH in Downtown Salt Lake.

I definitely like the new design better, I always hated that log cabin design. I think the new design fits in with Main St and the existing Arts Center much better.

While I liked many aspects of the first design, I agree with you whole heartedly Future Mayor. This design is a much better fit for Main's surroundings.

And really, the "Fun Dome" has been gone for what, a decade? I'm glad it will be getting a new life of some kind. Hopefully AISU will stay in business long enough for the building to not get more run down.

Ha! My company is doing a series of commercials for AISU right now. I was literally recording a radio spot for them last night.

I was at the Fun Dome the night of the drive by shooting in 2003.

Seems like after the shooting that place just went downhill.

Nope.. I worked there at the time.. That had nothing to so with it. The owner was crazy and wanted to do somthing new with the place.. The same guy owned it until the pet center closed.

I went home before the shooting happened.. I was going to come back and fax somthing.. But I called and had someone else do it.. I'm glad I didn't come back.. I could have been walking in right when it happend.... But contrary to popular rumor the shooting had zero negative impact on business.

On a side note KSL is reporting that the place "was" tore down today... What a bunch of idiots who can't do 30 seconds of research... They've taken most of the glass and some of the metal off of the Tourette's... That's about it.. It's not even going to be torn down :/

Yep, to me it was the 49th Street Galleria as well... Only time I ever went there was on a Band Trip in 8th grade. Rode the Gravitron... loved it!
