Nice find! In truth I was just going off the Risk board. Was a running joke between my brother and cousin and I.

..sorry, can't get the embed code to work.

Maybe they should consider this stuff? Not sure how much extra it would cost, but the bus shelters near me are constantly having the glass shattered by punks. How many replacements make this worth it? I see the glass broken around 5 times a year at 2 bus shelters...

Unless people are breaking the window panes while you're actually in the bus shelter, what's that going to do? The glass still breaks, it just stops the shards from going anywhere. The glass still has to be replaced, and so it's all extra cost with little to no benefit.

I think the benefit is when it's -30 you still have a shelter, with the glass walls just being more opaque. I wouldn't necessarily expect it to shatter as bad as the example where an explosion occured next to it either.

Also, I'd rather get this stuff:

I had seen a video elsewhere with the stuff, can't find it now, but it looked like it protected the glass from breaking at all with something more minor than a bomb blast.

Smash-proof windows are almost never laminated glass. Glass laminated with a good-quality security film will stop bullets, but can still shatter (at least in the optical sense) from a hammer or rock strike. I would guess that the window you saw was actually polycarbonate - as smash-proof security windows are one of its common uses.

I'd really like those to be implemented. Whether you're standing in a bus shelter which now only has one wall, or Chinook station where the place feels like it was bombed, the feel these broken and missing panes provide is you're in the ghetto.

For bus shelters I believe they are maintained by whoever has the transit street furniture advertising contract (different from the station and vehicle advertising contract). If you want change, lobby for either faster replacement or different standards for the next contract. I am not sure when it last came around, but I remember the last of the UV stained shelters being removed maybe 10 years ago?

You sure about that maintenance thing? I haven't seen the glass being replaced, but I have seen Calgary Transit trucks cleaning the glass regularly. Far West Advertising has then bench by my bus stop...

Shelters and bus stop benches outside transit loops are all maintained by the advertising contractor. Cleaning is actually done by a third party for the advertising contractor.

If you look closely on most you will see a little "viacom" or "cbs outdoor" decal on them. For instance this one on Ranchlands Blvd

Interesting, I will check mine tomorrow morning. I know Far West handles the bench ad there, as I contacted them once about it. The other one near me, I know had a Calgary transit cleaner at it last year, and it doesn't have a bench ad, so maybe they handle the ones without advertising? I'll try to remember to check it for a label.

Looks like the war is over: Proponents of the north and south legs of the Green Line are getting together to push for the entire line. Smart move.

I'm curious, how has the addition of 60 ft busses changed the #3 in the north? In the south, the improvement has been immense. The problems with pass ups, bus bunching, and overcrowding all seem to have been solved. It's like night and day.

It definitely has improved. There still is some bunching once you get in further in Mission area, but better: 2 busses every 10 minutes vs. 4 every 20 minutes. Liking the discussions at the Planning subcommittee recently around 4th street bus lanes to help out the southbound commuters too.

Report going to T&T next week on the suggested alignments for the North LRT. Its split into two reports First is the alignment north of 16th evaluating 10 options which combine 4th street, edmonton trail, centre and nose creek with at-grade, underground, elevated options.

Centre at grade and Edmonton trail at grade are the suggested options with Centre underground notably in third.

The Green line's alignment through downtown has been reopened as well.

The preferred options

Source Reports
Route Alignment North of 16th

Interesting the technical constraints on deliverability on 4th are so high...

I really hope the city sees sense and builds this properly. This is the corridor most deserving of good transit in the city, it would be a travesty to have it use an inferior mode of transit to the existing LRT.
