Man I gotta stop reading that leasing plan haha. The next few months should be pretty interesting in regards to the retail landscape in Moncton.

I believe you should ''reread'' history, when Walmart came to Canada in 1994 they did not have it easy and struggled for a while, we know where they are now; in the top spot in volume with Costco. Target is here for the long term and the initial investment to set up shop here is too much to fold, they haven't been here for a full year yet... In the business world, you need 10 years of operation to be stable and solid. If they decide to retract from the Canadian market, it won't be before 2020-2023...

You should give it a try and some time to get inventories adjusted accordingly. I been to Target several times and I much prefer Target over Walmart.

The CEO of Sears was apparently in town doing a tour of the store at Champlain Place the other day. He was interviewed by the T&T and apparently confirmed that the Sears store at the mall is safe and will not be sold.

This is in a sense good news, but the question now remains about where the Bay might set up if they choose to re-enter the Moncton market. The Bay did not want to close their Moncton store, but their hand was forced by Crombie REIT's decision to close Highfield Square. Apparently, store employees were told by managers at the time that the company would like to return to the Moncton market at some point in the future…….

Champlain Place would now appear to be out. The Walmart store has been renovated to a supercentre. The Sears store has been declared safe. The Sobeys apparently isn't moving, and one forumer has stated that the store will in fact be renovated and expanded. Since Champlain Place is the only true mall in the entire city, this could mean that if the Bay were really serious about coming back to the city that then they might look at the only other real option for them - a "high street" location.

If this were the case, I wonder about the Bay building a store as part of the events centre. It would appear to be the only logical option for them, and would constitute a return of the Bay to a downtown location where they formerly had hung their shingle in the first place.

This is of course all purely speculative, but it is logical and would help to make the events centre a venue that would be busy at all times of the day and evening. I firmly believe that a retail component at the front of the events centre facing Main Street would help to give the complex an important street presence and would make the complex seem much more alive. By making the events centre a focal point throughout the day (daytime shopping, evening events), it would also help to build a business case for a nearby parking garage. A garage couldn't survive just on evening sporting and entertainment events - a daytime revenue stream would be necessary as well………...

I have always admired this proposal for the events centre. If you study the image, there is a strong street presence on Main Street, and the northwest corner of the development fronting on Main (and the extended Weldon) streets would appear to contain a space that could easily accomodate a department store.

If the events centre is to be truly transformative for the west end of the downtown core, integrated retail, restaurants, pubs and services are a must. Otherwise, we will be stuck with another blank concrete wall in the downtown……..

Any speculation as to where the Bass pro store might locate. An article in the paper suggested that it would be an existing building and maybe taken over from an existing retailer that will be building a new store. The only one that comes to mind is the Home hardware store on Elmwood. Has anybody heard anything. I also heard from a very reliable source that Costco is still negociating to buy the land/space from Day & Ross and build a new store. Apparently it is down to a few details.

Those would appear to be the two most likely options - yes.

1) - a location on Elmwood as part of the Home Hardware development.
2) - a swap with Costco, with the Bass Pro store being built at Wheeler Park on the site of the current store, with Costco relocating to Mapleton at the TCH on the current Day & Ross site.

I have no information on this either - sorry; but there must be some reason why Bass Pro hasn't actually announced a location yet. Cabela's meanwhile is moving along expeditiously.

Bass Pro always seems to build in regional shopping nodes, so Wheeler Park would seem logical for them. A standalone store on Elmwood on the other hand would definitely be atypical for them unless there is a significant development moving into this location, like a Tanger Factory Outlet complex.

In either event, I imagine the formal announcement of a location is being hung up by legal technicalities. I imagine an announcement will be made in the next several months, but I think it's increasingly unlikely that the Bass Pro store will open in 2015 (especially if Costco has to move first).

Hudson's Bay stores have a been a staple of Canadian malls for decades (not plazas, strip malls or big-box developments), the only places where they setup shop in a downtown area is within Canada's largest cities, this is just not happening here. Sorry, but if Champlain is out of the equation, it's just dunzo for us in Moncton with HBC unless it returns in a new form... Home Outfitters, that's the most likely candidate. Take it or leave it, but that's my take on it.

Did the Sears guy go to the Sears Home store and see how empty it was? I don't know how that place is staying open.

Funny I was at Sears this afternoon and it was practically empty while the mall was really busy. I just think Sears is going to die a slow death.

One thing that people tend to forget about stores like Sears Home and Coach is that they don't need a store full of browsers to take home the bacon.

At Sears Home they only need a few customers a day to outfit a kitchen, living room or laundry room and they are in the green.

I have a friend who is in sales at Sears Home, he has won the national top volume salesman award for that company several times. They are certainly doing quite well in Moncton.

Tonight when I was comming home from work I saw that the entry way for the new Ashley furniture location was covered up. Is this a sign of more positive things to come for Mapleton Center?

So I see that there are 225 Staples stores slated for closure in North America. Doing the math, that probably means 30-40 store closures in Canada.

With two Staples locations in Moncton, will both survive? I imagine the Wheeler Park location is safe, but I'm not so sure about the East Main Street location. It never seems that busy.

Honestly good riddance, it is a fine store out in Trinity, but the one on Main is just an eye sore, I will feel bad for the employees, but this is a chance to gain another parcel of land that would look great with an apartment or condo on it.

Staples has been downsizing their stores for quite some time. I figured the Main Street store woul close anyway but I figured that they'd open a new one in Champlain Plaza phase II

Dream on! If the Staples closes on Main Street, they will revamp it a bit and another big-box style retailer will move right in or it might just sit empty and vacant for a while. That building is fairly new, it won't get demolished, land value in Moncton is not high enough to warrant demolition of a fairly new construction, they have vacant land all around downtown &vicinity and nothing's going up...

Look at the old Ford-Mercury (Hollis) dealership on Main Street, nothing happened to that thing and it's prime real estate, it's a better spot than Staples and nothing...

There was a fairly large development proposal next to it. Maybe they went into talks with Staples into buy it and that has shelved the project for now.

I highly doubt that is why it's stalled; $$$$$$$$$, the market and the demand, that's more like it.
Don't get me wrong, I hope it gets build because that proposal was quite nice.

I went to PetSmart today to get some new kibble for the cat, and I decided to ask the clerk at the cash who was moving into the space next to Bed, Bath & Beyond.

She confirmed what we already suspected. The space will be occupied by an Ashley Furniture Home Store………..
