I hear the Huntingdon track construction -- and the work that would be done on East Fairview Avenue south of the football field -- is dead ... for now, at least.

I also hear that HC owns some houses on College Court. Any idea why they'd buy those houses? How many? Future plans? Fraternity and/or sorority houses come to mind for some reason.

Firefighters and police officers soon will be working side-by-side in southeast Montgomery at a new public safety hub at the former Montgomery Mall.

The city Public Safety Department facility will house Fire Station No. 9 and a precinct station for the South and East precincts of the Montgomery Police Department.

Renovations at the facility, which will be known as DPS South Central, are scheduled to be completed by late fall...

The former mall building also is set to house Loveless Academic Magnet Program and Montgomery Technical Education Center, two programs in the Montgomery Public Schools system.

...It will house the Montgomery Fire Department’s Station No. 9, which formerly was housed across East South Boulevard in a double-wide trailer. The station will go from having one unit to having six, including an Advanced Life Saving medical unit.

...The station also will features individual bunking rooms...

The facility also will house offices for the city’s south and east police precincts.

Volunteers in Police Service will share space with the precinct officers, and there also is a temporary holding cell.

The eventual vision for the facility to have every service that is offered at police headquarters downtown, including a magistrate so residents can go there to sign arrest warrants, Police Chief Kevin Murphy said.

School Superintendent Barbara Thompson ...said the MTEC area is scheduled to be ready by August 2014 and that the LAMP area will be ready by January 2015.

The schools will have separate entrances, and they will include green areas where there currently is concrete to make them feel more like school campuses.

“It will not look like Montgomery Mall,” Thompson said.

The school system currently owns the old Parisian building and is working on purchasing the old JCPenney building.

There still will be 400,000 square feet of empty mall between the schools that remains owned by a private developer...

Here is what I know, PriMed corp offices are there, HP (EDS) is moving in and moving out of the building directly behind there, the FDIC has a whole floor, Handcock bank is moving in soon, and a rental car disctrict office is there as well. I hear that the building is almost 100% leased. And tw telecom is expanding its 10GBPS fiber network to the area as well,

Hancock Bank is moving a corporate and operation center to the city of Montgomery.

The center will be located in Montgomery's Capitol Commerce Center. It will be home to the company's operations, call center, commercial banking and support professionals.

The bank says it plans to employ 200 people at this location. About half of those positions will be filled with new employees. Officials say they expect to fill the positions within the next year.

A new apartment complex is coming to the Old Cloverdale neighborhood -- but will it keep the charm that makes this historic district so loved?

Just across the street from Old Cloverdale businesses on East Fairview Avenue is an empty plot of land -- but that's only for now. Montgomery city councilman, Arch Lee says a three-story, 48-apartment complex will sit on the corner of Navarro Avenue and Boultier Street in the near future, next to the old Cloverdale School.

"The demand, I would think, would be there, you know, with the universities in that area and as well as the neighborhoods there for some single individuals, single families wanting to live there," said ...Lee.

But what will the apartments look like?

It's a question Tony Hickman... of the Old Cloverdale Association has. He hopes the apartments will preserve the look of the historic district. "We do have concerns we feel certain and hope that they would keep the plan in the spirit of the neighborhood as far as design goes," said Hickman.

Lee says there has been a demand to bring apartments to Cloverdale for years... "It brings, you know, increased property value,

more people down there, more business, hey you know if those business owners in that area.

You're about to get potentially 100-plus new residents right across the street from you," said Lee.

Hickman says ... "Our design, architectural styles, there's such an eclectic mix in our neighborhoods and we like that a lot. We just feel very strongly we want to keep it in that spirit," said Hickman. Hickman says another concern for him is parking in the area. He says it's already a problem and *hopes the developer will go before the Old Cloverdale Association to present the apartment plan.

Now, that the area has been re-plotted, the apartment plans will be submitted to the city in the coming weeks, according to Lee.

A groundbreaking date has not been set yet.

The City of Montgomery and Foshee Management Company announced today plans to revitalize lower Dexter Avenue by developing it into a pedestrian-friendly Market District.

... 14 buildings will be redeveloped by Foshee Management Company to house restaurants, entertainment venues, loft apartments, office space and more...

... the area will be closed off to vehicle traffic from lower Dexter Avenue to Commerce Street, including the area around the fountain, on the weekends.

... the management company will kick off the project with work on the building located at 44 Dexter Avenue by creating lofts, office space and commercial space.

In following weeks, Foshee Management Company plans to redevelop what was formerly the Belk building. ...removal of the canopy will begin next week and construction on the building will start in the early summer. The company plans for the building to be the home of 30 lofts and 30,000 square feet of commercial space.

The buildings that are expected to be redeveloped are currently displaying large red banners with the Market District logo.

"It's a game changer in we will redefine lower Dexter, and in redefining lower Dexter, you then redefine the entire Dexter and the entire gateway into Montgomery... The whole concept of this Market District, having street fairs, having people having fun, is really the vision."

New development at Commerce/Bibb will have 64 upscale residential units; deal in works for restaurant

Downtown development continues to pick up steam in 2014 with the announcement Thursday of a residential and commercial development moving forward at Commerce and Bibb streets.

Capital Growth and Retail Specialists of Birmingham are teaming up to bring 64 upscale residential units and space for commercial development at the site of the old Frank Leu building.

A deal to locate a restaurant in the development is in the final stages, and an announcement is expected soon, Mead Silsbee, chief operating officer of Retail Specialists.

Mayor Todd Strange said the restaurant is one that is not new to the city and that it will be adding a location, not moving from an existing one.

The restaurant will take up 6,200 square feet, and there will be additional 10,000 square feet available for other businesses and for amenities for tenants such as meeting rooms and common areas, Silsbee said.

The development is patterned after a similar development Retail Specialists was involved with in Birmingham called 29 Seven.

Construction on the the five-story development will start in late spring or early summer, and it is expected to be completed by late summer or early fall 2015, Silsbee said.

The cost of leasing a unit has not been determined, but likely will be in the range of about $1.20 a square foot with apartment sizes between 700 and 1,050 square feet, Silsbee said.

Birmingham's downtown development is booming and Montgomery's development has been trickling along for the last 3-4 years.

I guess that's what happens when you elect an incompetent congress woman then jerry mander the congressional seat. In general Dems believe in the redevelopment of city centers and Tea Baggers do not. Mayor Strange gives me a little hope for Repub's.

Gerrymander* One congresswoman doesn't have much power to influence redevelopment in one neighborhood in their district other than to try and direct money towards it. Either way, I seriously doubt MGM officials called her asking for help and were just met with, "BAHHHH!! NO! Evil downtowns! Evil! I hate gays!"

I'm not trying to defend Republicans, or endorse Democrats for that matter, I'm just saying your argument is a bit ridiculous. Sometimes downtown development activity hits a lull.

Also, going back to the gerrymandering you're complaining about, portions of Montgomery were brought into District 7 (Terry Sewell's district) during the latest redistricting. So Montgomery actually receives more representation by a Democrat now than it did before. Also, Sewell's Montgomery office is in downtown.
