I don't think the moderator will mind that little rant LOL since nobody was bashing anybody else. But on the other topic. since the rules are relaxed, I think its purely for new construction. many of LA's current tallest buildings were built 20-30 years ago. even though they are built strong, most aren't built to current standards like the Wilshire grand and I'm sure the city would pound its chest if any of the current tallest decided to do away with their flat roofs....I would love to see more crowns/ spires downtown but I think most of the current buildings down there wouldn't look too great with spires/crowns since they were designed to be purely flat roofed buildings. the only 2 buildings I can see maybe getting away with adding a spire/crown is the US bank/library tower building and maybe the building directly across the street from the Wilshire grand on the corner of fig and Wilshire. I can see that building adding a crown and a spire on top.

The really tall ones amaze me on Santa Ana wind days. I've seen them bending so far that the head of the tree is on the opposite side of the street as the base of the trunk!

^^^ I think that was a response to my post at #1623.... I was responding to someone who asked why doesn't some of LA's older towers add spires and crowns like the Wilshire grand since the rules have relaxed since than... and I said the only building I could see with an added crown/spire would be library tower... a crown though.. not so much a spire.

Its the worst idea, especially when the skyline is full of flat tops. The spire on Wilshire Grand is different since the building "folds" all lead to the spire. Now a spire on the US Bank Tower.... That would look weird since it would be in the middle of the building's helipad (which is circular) and the spire would have to be huge to make it look like it was there when the tower was being built.
