It does sound nice. Which is why I find when people make comments like these:

Going back to what Reeveley said...He quotes Watson's “Whether you’re a sports fan, a shopper, a movie-goer, or simply want to gather with your family and friends, the new Lansdowne will truly offer something for everyone" then says "For the rest of us … an awful lot hangs on the remaining 20 per cent."

All right. Now Reevely has been as fair as anyone in regards to this thing. But I find he's off the mark a bit here.

I doubt very much that that other 20% will blow a lot of minds. At the end of the day, they'll just be...stores. They may be stores that we're not familiar with or that provide something unusual, but it'll still be stores.

I think the possibility of events like the one I posted earlier are where the draw is going to be for people well out of the neighborhood. I can imagine that the place would be a huge Winterlude stop for several days, for example. The Jazzfest mention is another, and Bluesfest spreads itself around too.

So yeah, because we don't know all that it will host it's easy to dismiss it as "just a park/stores/stadium etc". But it'll have the ability to provide much more, relatively regularly. That's why I'm excited about it.

How about hockey? Anyone like that stuff?

The Ottawa Senators are making plans to host an outdoor National Hockey League game to coincide with celebrations for Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, according to those familiar with the tourism industry’s plans for the year’s events.

Mayor Jim Watson is lending his support to the team as they engage in discussions with the NHL about bringing the game to Lansdowne Park sometime during that year, according to Ryan Kennery, a spokesman for the mayor.

And while it is a longshot (a very longshot, really), how about the FIFA World Cup in 2026?

Wha??? "The" FIFA World Cup? In a refurbished ~20,000 seat stadium? (Sorry but I don't count the temporary stands that we would inevitably have to install) The World Cup gets played in 60-80,000 seat venues. Usually new ones that don't require temporary scaffolds for extra seating.

Let's just accept what we have. A decent, but not great, renovated stadium that will be just fine for the cfl. If we wanted to host anything better than that, we should have built something better than that.

I hope you meant the toddlers World Cup or something. If you want to attract world class events, you can't build your facilities on the cheap.

I'm not sure I would be so negative on this as you seem to be concerning our venue. Many venues used in the group stage of the World Cup are in the 40K range, which TD Place could be expanded to. And by 2026 there may be ways to build quality temporary stands that aren't just scaffolds. Heck, there were venues for the Sochi Olympics that can be disassembled and rebuilt somewhere else. The Shayba arena which held many of the hockey games is one of those. However, I tend to think the idea of Canada hosting this event is a longshot. Our place on the mens' soccer ladder means they may look at other countries to host the tournament before considering Canada.

Point being, we couldn't even discuss having an event like this without the ongoing development.

FIFA World Cup is hosted by a country, not a city. Mayor's letter is merely an endorsement of Canada hosting, and willingness for Ottawa to be ONE of the host cities and for TD place to be part of it. So it wouldn't be a) the only venue or b) the largest venue.

Just like the women's FIFA championship that Canada is hosting.

And of which Ottawa is a host city, and TD Place the venue, up to and including a quarter-final match.

Awful thing, that Lansdowne development.

A strong chance that b-ball may be joining the sports mix at TD Place

Quote:
By Trevor Greenway--Metro News

If Gus Takkale learned one thing during the very first year his Ottawa SkyHawks took to the court, it’s that Kanata is way too far.

The owner of Ottawa’s pro basketball team told Metro Monday – a day after his SkyHawks endured a heart-breaking, season-ending loss – that he is working on securing a new home venue at TD Place at Landsdowne for next season.

It’s a more central venue that can draw more fans to what Takkale calls a growing sport in Ottawa.

“It’s ideal,” said Takkale of moving to Landsdowne next season. “You tap into the downtown, you tap into the university students in Ottawa University and Carleton, you tap into Gatineau. You tap into a whole different marketplace of people, parking, bus routes. It’s night and day.”

Takkale said there was never a problem getting people out to games, as the team averaged 1,900 spectators for weekend games and about 860 for weekdays, but getting out to the Canadian Tire Centre is just too much of a hassle, he said.

“If you can have 1,900 people come out to Kanata with the traffic, with the location, with the -40s in some games, I think you can do some really great stuff downtown,” he said.

“A central location is a no-brainer.”

Aside from a venue change, Takkale said the SkyHawks are also focusing on landing local sponsors to help drive the team financially, as it did struggle a bit this season with the league and other team owners on standby to help with cash if needed. The SkyHawks never did take a loan and Takkale says for the team to survive long-term, it needs local support.

The SkyHawks finished its debut season with a winning record of 21-20, good enough for sixth place in the National Basketball League. The team had a shot at squeaking into the playoffs, but fell to the last-place Mississauga Power in a 103-100 loss Sunday.

I'd love to see this happen. I enjoy basketball, but not to the point that I'd got to Kanata to see it. At Lansdowne after work some time, or on weekends? No problem.

I have a long-standing policy of never paying to see basketball, but if there is a team in the neighbourhood I might have to make the odd exception.

In any event, while expected, this is good news for Lansdowne. More events means a better chance of viability.

Why not name them for Ottawa sports figures; Frank Clair maybe . Think one of the streets should be named for the Aberdeen Pavilion. Something to commemorate our 1902 win of the Stanley Cup in the AP?

Exhibition and Marché (a botched attempt to make the French population happy?) are terrible names.

Based on the site plan there is also Aberdeen Way and Lansdowne Way (the two main entrance roads from Bank)... So Exhibition and Marché may be some of the new short interior lanes?

Seeing as there will be a monument built tfor Frank Clair at Lansdowne, a Lansdowne street named after him should not be necessary.
