Wow. Hostile much? I just think it's a corny name. Especially with the "-tex" spelling. It doesn't look/sound like a professional team. It sounds like a minor league team.

syndic has expressed certain things about mexico before and how he/she finds it "offensive" for austin to even have a museum dedicated to hispanics on Congress. so the last statement is considerably suspect.

from my gathering, syndic is libertarian... i've found libertarians often times say things off the wall where they retract a bit and have to reexplain themselves. republicans just say it... they don't care.

so while, i would have agreed that "aztex" sounds cheesy for a soccer team... it doesn't change how syndic feels about mexico. especially when using a term like "really against the name." I've never been against a name. I've disliked names sure, but never been against. how could you be against a name unless you have some sort of ideology? i've been against an ideology but never against a name, unless it was an offensive name.

Absolutely none

Mind you I'm Cherokee-- not "'my great grandmother was a Cherokee Princess' Cherokee", but you know, actually Cherokee. I even speak the language.

The Aztec empire was (and current Aztec population is) focused in south-central Mexico. The indigenous group whose land Austin is on are the Comanche, with the Tonkawa a bit Southeast, Waco Tribe to the north and the Lipan to the Southwest.

The name "Aztex" makes no sense to me or anybody else.

As a bit of a sidenote, I tend to be against all "Native American Mascots" but that's another discussion for another time and another place.

My great grandmothers through my dad's mom's side were both natives. Cherokee and Comanche. I'm whiter than white, so I don't try and claim I'm Native American. haha

My questions were rhetorical, though. I think the Aztex name is pretty ridiculous.

Ya'll... Aztecs makes complete sense because it is a play on words.

Most teams have absolutely nothing to do with place, but rather about economics. This one, actually, has a lot to do with place because of the play on words:

Austin, Texas ...
Aus., Tex. ...
AzTex ...

It just so happens that it lends itself to being a pretty cool team name as well. So who cares? I'm fine with it. It's cool and multi-cultural. Austin is a liberal city, despite what some here would prefer, and that liberalism is inherently intertwined with multi-cultural trends.

It's unfortunate because I want to support the team (I like soccer a lot) but I just feel stupid doing so since it's such a ridiculously bad name. Somewhere along the line, someone high up will impress upon the owners that it's not good enough for MLS, though. I get the logic behind the name. I just think it's silly and corny.

Also, I'm not a libertarian. I dunno how you could come to that conclusion from reading my comments. Everyone here knows I'm a socialist. But give it a rest, migol24. Stop being mad.

Chivas USA (no where near Guadalajara, in fact I think we may be closer)
Real Salt Lake (not in Spain and not awarded a royal title by the King of Spain)
or (ugh) Sporting Kansas City

Chivas USA has been purchased by MLS. They will be sold and undergo a rebranding in the next year. Their attendance was 🞵🞵🞵🞵 partly because their brand was 🞵🞵🞵🞵. Just like ours.

I like Sporting Kansas City. Real Salt Lake is bad but they were part of the first few teams in MLS so names have gotten better since then.

Houston OILERS - Oh we work in oil, we like oil, that's what Texans are proud to represnt
DALLAS COWBOYS- Personally thought it was cheesy for no reason except that it's Texas.
NY GIANTS - O I guess they are really big. Just cheese.
NY RED BULLS- Sell outs
Portland Timbers- Someones got wood
LA Lakers- It somewhat did make sense in Minneapolis but not LA.
Miami Fusion - Is that a knock off sports drink or something
Austin High Maroons- Because we are just a color

I personally love the Ice Bats. It kinda represented Austin. Its at least better than The Austin Ice Salamanders. I like Austin Armadillos though. I like the Aztex I went to school with people from Aztec descent so to say it doesn't belong in Austin would be incorrect.

I've always sort of thought that sports mascots all had dumb names, and few of them ever reflect the area they "represent". I'd say of any sport local high school mascots tend to make the most sense because most of their mascots can actually be found in the area, or at least were in the area at one time. For example, I went to Bedichek. Their mascot is the bobcat, and you can still find bobcats in Central Texas. I saw on the news this week there was a pit bull that was attacked by a bobcat up in Round Rock. The dog's owner ran out with an ax and beat the bobcat off his dog. And supposedly there have been mountain lions (cougars) spotted in Southwest Austin before.

Geez...What is really ridiculous is that y'all are arguing about a name! Who cares about the name (at this time)...rather, we should be asking: how is someone (or who) going to come up with enough capital to field a team? Where is the stadium going to be built (i.e, Houston's urban BBVA Stadium covers about 12 acres)? And, who is going to pony-up the $100MM to build said stadium?

As much as I love soccer, I don't see Austin getting a "downtown" stadium any time soon. A franchise...maybe. But, that stadium will more than likely be built out on the fringes of town (where there is more land, the land is cheaper, and the cities/neighborhoods are friendlier to this type of development).

I think the Austin American Statesman should be relocated to the outskirts of town and an arena or stadium should be put in its place.
The MLS team name could be the Austin Weirdos...in keeping with the "Keep Austin Weird" slogan.

Not to press this subject but saying there are no Aztec's in Austin is not true. Many Hispanics that live here are of Aztec ancestry. My best friend and her dads family are as true Azteca as you can get. Her father moved here from Mexico City back in the 70s as well as many others from Central Mexico.
