I haven't found this winter too be all that bad, certainly in the USA it has been, but I don't think it's been any worse than other years in Ottawa. It was also super warm well into November this year.

But yea, working day in and day out outside in the winter likely —.

Ottawa RedBlacks Looking to Name the New Mascot

February 21, 2014 By Lansdowne Park

The Ottawa RedBlacks new mascot is a throwback to the capital’s history as a lumber town. The mascot hasn’t yet been named. The team said it plans to hold a naming campaign.

A smiling, axe wielding, and muscled lumberjack complete with a Jay Leno looking chin is Ottawa’s new mascot.

The mascot was unveiled to an enthusiastic Ottawa’s 67′s crowd at Canadian Tire Centre.

REDBLACKS fans were quick to give their thoughts on the new Ottawa Redblacks football team mascot, which was unveiled at an Ottawa 67′s hockey game on last Monday.

[IMG][/IMG]

February 21, 2014 By Lansdowne Park

Minto, the town home builder plans to begin to mobilize at Lansdowne during the week. Some of these activities will include putting up fencing and the removal of the wooden hoarding boards.

Construction of the townhouses will begin in the next few weeks near the corner of Bank and Holmwood, at the rear of ‘Building A’, and continue east, along Holmwood.

Normal traffic flow will be maintained on Holmwood, though on-street parking in the construction area will be affected

Cineplex has announced 10 screens including 3 licensed adult-only Cineplex VIP theatres to open at Lansdowne "later this year"

Between the closing downtown theatres, this and the Mayfair, I would say that area of the city will be the main central movie district in town - catering to all sorts of different stuff.

The tickets in other cities are between 17.99 and 19.99 compared to a regular ticket of 11-something.

No idea the food and beverage pricing.

Cineplex to open 10-screen movie theatre at Lansdowne this year

By Michael Woods, OTTAWA CITIZEN February 24, 2014 12:13 PM

OTTAWA — Cineplex Entertainment is planning to open a 10-screen movie theatre at Lansdowne Park sometime this year, it was announced Monday.

The new theatre will be “one of Canada’s most luxurious and technically advanced movie theatres,” Cineplex said in a release.

The Lansdowne theatre’s future had been in doubt since the summer when Empire Theatres — which had signed a lease to operate a new luxury cinema at the former fairground in the Glebe — abruptly bailed out of the movie business.

Toronto-based Cineplex, which operates more than 160 theatres across the country, had been in exclusive talks with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group — the group of land developers and sports businessmen who partnered with the city to renovate Lansdowne — to run the cinema.

“Our theatre at Lansdowne will be one of the most impressive buildings of its type in Canada,” the company’s president and CEO Ellis Jacob said in the release.

Three of the screens will be “VIP Cinema auditoriums,” luxurious adult-only theatres which are licensed to serve alcohol, have reserved seating and offer food and beverage service to individual seats. Another will be an UltraAVX auditorium.

“Cineplex is Canada’s top theatre operator and today’s announcement is a big win for Lansdowne and Ottawa moviegoers,” said John Ruddy, a partner in the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group.

The news may come as a relief to moviegoers whose only current downtown options are the ByTowne and Mayfair Theatres, which cater to more specialized audiences.

The future of the theatre at Lansdowne had been in question since the summer when Empire Theatres announced it was selling nearly all its theatres and dividing them between Cineplex and Calgary-based Landmark Theatres.

But Empire’s two downtown locations, the functioning cinema at the World Exchange Plaza and the still-under-construction complex at Lansdowne, were left out of the deal.

The cinemas at World Exchange closed in December after Landmark and property management company Bentall Kennedy couldn’t reach a longer-term deal beyond the lease’s expiration.

Empire Theatres had already closed its cinemas at the Rideau Centre in March.

Labatt inks deal with Lansdowne Park developers 3

By Denis Armstrong ,Ottawa Sun
First posted: Wednesday, February 26, 2014 12:31 PM EST | Updated: Wednesday, February 26, 2014 12:36 PM EST

Hey Lansdowne, this Bud’s for you.

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) announced they’ve signed an exclusive multi-year partnership with beer giant Labatt Breweries.

The deal makes Labatts the exclusive supplier of domestic and imported beers for all sports and entertainment events at TD Place, and makes Budweiser the official beer for the CFL’s RedBlacks, the Ottawa 67s and the Ottawa Fury.

Labatts’ lineup of domestic and imported beers will be on tap at venues throughout the park including game-day tailgate parties and beer gardens for all RedBlacks and Fury games.

“We’re delighted to welcome Labatt to the OSEG team as a founding partner and excited by the opportunity to offer our fans their global selection of high-quality beers,” said Jeff Hunt, president of OSEG Sports. “Our goal is to provide visitors with an exceptional experience and Labatts shares that commitment ... connecting with consumers with a variety of tastes and experiences.”

Quote:
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) today released an update on committed retail tenants at Lansdowne, Ottawa’s new lifestyle destination in the geographic centre of the city. Lansdowne will offer a broad spectrum of retail, dining and recreation experiences on a 40-acre section of Ottawa’s most cherished neighborhood, the Glebe.

“Earlier this week, Cineplex Entertainment announced a unique to Ottawa, state-of-the-art, ten-screen theatre complex at Lansdowne and today I’m excited to talk about some of our other retail partners,” said OSEG Chairman Roger Greenberg. “We have now leased over 80% of the retail space at Lansdowne which affirms our shared vision with the City of Ottawa for transforming Lansdowne into a vibrant mixed-use destination. We’ve also exceeded our target of hosting 40% new-to-Ottawa or unique retailers at Lansdowne and that percentage will advance as we finalize leases for the remaining retail space.”

“I’m delighted to see the retail vision for Lansdowne become a reality,” said John Williams, Senior Partner in the J.C. Williams Group, which proposed the strategic retail planning report approved by Council, which outlined the composition and vision of shops at Lansdowne.

“The objective was twofold: to create a unique urban village with interesting stores, cafés, restaurants, services, cinemas and entertainment; and to complement the Glebe’s Bank Street retail shops and cafés by providing stores and services that are missing on Bank Street. I think OSEG has made great strides towards achieving both of these objectives.”
“I’m pleased to see to even more retailers sign on to the exciting Lansdowne Park revitalization — this is a vote of confidence in the project and our city’s economic future,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Whether you’re a sports fan, a shopper, a movie-goer, or simply want to gather with your family and friends, the new Lansdowne will truly offer something for everyone.”

“We welcome the new businesses to the area,” said Greg Best, Chair of the Glebe BIA. “The Glebe is a popular destination and we’re confident the shops, restaurants and services announced today will do well here in one of Ottawa’s most vibrant shopping districts.”
As outlined below, the new urban village at Lansdowne will include a mixture of new and familiar shops, restaurants and services.

Well known in Western Canada, JOEY Restaurants will bring their innovative casual fine dining concept to Ottawa. JOEY President and CEO Jeff Fuller says the urban village concept at Lansdowne was key to his decision to expand to Ottawa. “The Lansdowne concept is very much in-line with our own concept for JOEY,” said Fuller. “Inside, we’re lively and luxurious and outside, our patio spaces are designed to provide guests with a vacation atmosphere. The synergy of urban retail space and parkland at Lansdowne is in perfect alignment with our philosophy.”

With almost 900,000 members across Canada, GoodLife Fitness is Canada’s most popular health and fitness club, perfectly aligned with the healthy lifestyle environment offered by Lansdowne. GoodLife will open a state-of-the art 30,000 square foot health and fitness club on the lower level of TD Place with easy access from the urban village shopping district and the underground parking garage.

Whole Foods Market is the world’s leading retailer of natural and organic foods. With over 360 market stores in North America and Europe, it makes its Ottawa debut at Lansdowne.

A new concept LCBO VQA Destination Boutique featuring an expanded selection of Ontario’s VQA wines, including hard-to-find wines from smaller producers, will be housed inside a full-size LCBO store

South St. Burger Company makes its Ottawa debut with premium, 100% pure and fresh gluten free Angus Beef burgers, grilled chicken breasts, New York Fries and other favorites in a contemporary New York loft-style environment.

Also new to Ottawa, Local Lounge and Grill is an urban retreat featuring VQA wines, innovative cocktails and craft brewed draught beers, coupled with a menu that features classic favorites prepared with seasonal local ingredients.

A next-generation, energy-efficient TD Bank concept at Lansdowne marries environmental sustainability and TD’s legendary customer service in a uniquely inviting space, seven days a week.

Cineplex Cinemas Lansdowne and VIP is a visionary 10-screen, state-of-the-art theatre complex that offers luxurious seating and licensed in-seat service in some of its movie auditoriums.

New to Ottawa, Sporting Life is Canada’s headquarters for energetic visitors of all ages. At Lansdowne, they’ll offer 43,000 sq. ft. of top-of-the-line, brand-name equipment and lifestyle fashion for those who live The Sporting Life.

Other confirmed retail outlets at Lansdowne include: REDBLACKS/67′s/Fury FC team store, PetSmart, Pharma Plus, The Source, BMO, Telus, Rinaldo’s, Booster Juice, Jack Astor’s and Milestones. Several other retail leases are in the final stages of discussion and will be announced in the coming weeks.

Collectively, the Lansdowne retail district, in harmony with TD Place, the new urban park, residential dwellings and the office tower, represent a modern urban village in a park setting with synergies to satisfy the diverse needs of the Glebe and Ottawa at large.

Recently went to a South St Burger joint and I loved it. For fast food it was up there with Harvey's for me. Almost as good as a burger that I would get at a sit down place. As for the rest of the retailers... it's 'meh' at best. Nothing there besides Whole Foods is going to make people visit the place. There are banks, drug stores, pet food places everywhere. I was expecting more clothing boutiques to be honest. Maybe I had too high of hopes.

Wow...At the risk of inciting comments from a certain individual (it'll probably happen regardless), I will say I'm a little disappointed :S With that said, many of the restaurants going in at lansdowne we currently do not have (in that sense they are "unique"), and they will likely appeal to the crowds going to games or concerts (not to mention the condo dwellers). But, the other retail options are pretty underwhelming. Do they really need a Petsmart?! Are there no other Pet stores nearby? And, what happened to a furniture store (Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware)?

It's interesting they didn't mention anything about the previously leaked Mountain Warehouse, Famoso Pizzeria, Roots establishments... I guess those haven't been finalized yet?

I think the article only confirmed the outfits that have signed a lease. The others could be pending.

Not impressed at all. Right now it looks like a RIO CAN or SmartCentre development. Petsmart? The Source? This isn't a unique urban village. Some of these tenants may be new to Ottawa, but you can find suburban retail developments in the GTA with some of these tenants. My out of town guests might be impressed by the park and some design elements, but not the retail. It seems they went overboard in trying to please Glebe residents. It would be nice if they had a few clothing stores.

+1 Unimpressed.

I guess what the retail makeup looks like is a Trinity Developments suburban shopping centre, well, because Trinity Developments is in charge of the retail portion at Lansdowne. And I don't think they know how to do anything else.

The early PR invoked Granville Island and Winnipeg's The Forks. But the reality is that Lansdowne has more to do with South Keys than anything else.

Not quite clear how they're pleasing Glebe residents. If I want a Petsmart or Source, there are plenty such things nearby.

Just more evidence that this is a horribly missed opportunity, and that the true agenda at Lansdowne had little to do with football, and everything to do with delivering prime City-owned land to private development interests for $1 a year. Well done, Roger and the Boys!
