I found an Article talking about the Walmart expansion, but there was an interesting passage in it.

Details of specific store and distribution centre projects will be announced as they become finalized, but it's expected to focus on eastern Canada where it opened its first supercentre in 2013. While small grocers are experimenting with discount small-store formats, Broader said Walmart is focused on its supercentre locations-- which can range anywhere between 63,000 square feet to 220,000 square feet. The chain spent $450 million to open or expand 37 additional supercentres in 2013-14....It said six of the stores will be new, 10 will be expansions and 18 will be retrofitted to add a fresh food section. One store will be relocated.

What I thought was interesting was the inclusion of the distribution centre in the article and that they said they would be focusing on eastern Canada.

How does a press release from 4 years ago tell you that?


My apologies, I thought it was February 2014 but it was 2010. So maybe a conversion of the space does make sense.

No need to apologize cbujold, you're not the first person to have been fooled by not checking the date on a press release….

Still, it is interesting that a couple of forumers have come forward recently with a rumour that changes may be in store for Crystal Palace. This still constitutes nothing more than hearsay, but where there is smoke, there is frequently fire. You don't have to name your sources, but it might be nice to know if you think your source is reliable or not……

In any event, Crystal Palace is probably due for a makeover of some kind. I think the recent reconstruction of the Cineplex Theatre might have hurt the amusement park a bit because the entrance to the theatre is now external to the building itself. As such, people aren't killing time in the arcade or on the rides while they are waiting for a movie. There hasn't been a new ride installed at Crystal Palace in at least five years or so.

I would have no trouble believing that a renovation is in order. This might be as simple as switching out some of the rides, but there could be room to expand the park a bit to the rear of the building, especially since the parking lot on that side of the building is not as busy as it used to be since the theatre entrance has been moved to face Champlain Place. As I have said, the possibility of an indoor water park would be intriguing (a smaller scale version of the one at West Edmonton Mall for example).

I rather doubt they would close the park and convert the space to retail. I also doubt they would actually connect Crystal Palace to Champlain Place directly, as this would significantly compromise traffic flow in the parking lot, but you never know. If CF wanted to go big time and put a parking structure between the two buildings, almost anything could be possible.

Wasn't Crystal Palace original plans designed for a casino? I believe it was. They built it in hopes of convincing the NB Gov to approve its first gaming house in NB.

Approval never came and they went with plan B, indoor playground.

I can't see Crystal Palace being renovated into a casino now, but it does have all of the necessities in place for a quick low cost refit.

Besides, I'm pretty sure CasinoNB must have signed an exclusive deal with the province for x amount of years. Plus, I don't think there's enough support for two casinos in Moncton & Dieppe.

And if you follow poker any, back in 2007, someone tried to organized a poker tournament at Crystal Palace with special invited guests, Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari.

If I remember correctly, something went wrong and they had to move the event at the Dart Club. Phil & Antonio ended up a no show.

There's something afoot at the Mapleton Centre.

The unit in the main building (Building "B") listed as Ashley Furniture Home Store in the image below appears to be having exterior signage installed.



I don't know if in fact it is Ashley Furniture moving into this unit or not, but the framing for the sign appears to be the right shape, which is intriguing. The only Ashley Furniture store in the region right now is in Halifax.

In any event, it would appear that this unit has been leased which is a good vote of confidence in this development. This means that the largest vacant storefront in the Mapleton Centre is going to be filled in, and that the largest building in the development (Building "B") will be 3/4's leased.

Any word on when phase 2 could be? I feel like a Lee Valley showroom would do well in Moncton too, the only other one in the region is in Bayers Lake.

Phase two won't happen until phase one is substantially leased, which probably won't be for some time. The undeveloped standalone pads backing on Mapleton Road now suffer from some competition from the Mapleton Crossing development further down Mapleton Road. Mapleton Crossing has an attractive location near the TCH and Cabela's will be a powerful draw. The plans for Mapleton Crossing include a sit down restaurant pad and a fast food pad with a drive-thru at the entrance, fronting on Mapleton Road. For example, I often thought Starbucks might be a good fit for the Mapleton Centre. I now think Mapleton Crossing would be more attractive for them.

Further to the above, here is a photo from today showing the work being done to the entrance to that unit in Building "B" in the Mapleton Centre, that might be an Ashley Furniture Home Store.

Possibly; but the Ashley Furniture logo would appear to be a better fit for the shape of the sgn they are installing…….

Home Outfitters would be a nice addition to the Moncton retail sector, more than another furniture store, it would also be the first and only New Brunswick location. If Ashley is taking this spot, Home Outfitters could go next door in the near future. I said it before, I think JYSK could fit well in this development, maybe in the Phase II.

Did anybody see job posts for Ashley?

I can't see Home Outfitters going in Mapleton Centre for the simple fact that Bed Bath & Beyond is already there. I can see a chain of events happening like this tho. Princess Auto moves to Mapleton Crossing, opening a bigger store similar to the Saint John store. Home Outfitters moves into the former Princess Auto space. It would be a very smart move for Princess Auto to go there, as the male target demographic is shared with Cabella's. There is also the potential to have a shared building with Lee Valley & Princess Auto.
The Lee Lalley in Halifax is 17,910 sq. ft.
The Princess Auto in Saint John is 30,139 sq. ft.
= 48049 sq. ft. Building D in Mapleton Crossing is listed as being 49,000 sq. ft.

Champlain Place News

- The renovations at Eclipse are now finished. The temporary store in the old Costa Blanca location has closed.
- Children's Place have moved to their new location next to Tip Top. As such, the final barrier to the renovations for Victoria's Secret +/- Pink have been removed. I expect the construction drywall to go up in the next few weeks.

According the leasing plan it shows that Garage is moving into the former Bluenotes location.
Also, whatever happened to the rumors that Champlain was now a national chain mall only? If I am not mistaken, Champlain Dental Clinic is still a local business.

Nope, that is a temporary location, Garage is undergoing renovations too.

Champlain Dental and Cuts 2000 were the only two businesses to survive the pogrom. Their spaces probably wouldn't have been attractive to a national retailer in any event. Better to rent to a local business rather than not at all......

Home Outfitters could go next to BB&B, they are located very close at Dartmouth Crossing, these stores can be located near each other, Bouclair is right next to Home Sense, we can see these examples elsewhere... Secondly, the current Princess Auto is too small for a Home Outfitters, the average size of Home Outfitters is around 35 000 sq.ft.; the current Princess Auto is 25K. It's also hidden, I don't like that location because of its poor visibility behind the DQ and the CCNB.

Champlain Dental might free up next year actually. Not sure what retailer would end up there though, its an ackward layout with little hallway frontage.

Looks like Target Canada is hurting. Not surprising to me, because I've said in previous post, I walked into Target 3-4 times since they've been opened here in Moncton, and each time, the place was a ghost town and my hands were empty walking out each time.

If nothing changes in the next 12 months strategically wise, I can't see this place surviving beyond spring of 2015.
