I wish SLC could incorporate the entire county into SLC boundaries.

Paris just sucked up 124 municipalities in its suburbs into what they are calling Grand Paris (Métropole du Grand Paris in French). They passed the law in January, but it won't take effect until Jan. 1, 2016. More municipalities next to these can join if they want, they haven't decided, yet. It takes Paris' population from 2.3 million to 6.7 million, but more importantly, they can better coordinate growth between the existing city and its suburbs.

I said on this forum many years ago that he should have put it on the block north of Little America. They could've had created a great synergy between the two hotels by having a bridge connecting the convention space of the two hotels, allowing the hotels to host larger conventions. As it is now, they never have conventions that use both spaces. They are used quite independently.

And. as I previously posted, the back door of the hotel would be only 2 blocks from Salt Palace then, instead of 4 blocks and be a part of the fabric of the city. And it would've had the TRAX stop right at its door for guests to use more easily.

If you took the current configuration of the GA, flipped it around so the front faces east on the Little America block, the existing back door would be near the intersection of 400 S and West Temple. The LA and GA convention spaces would be very close to each other as LA's meeting spaces are on the north of its block. Easy to connect via a skybridge. A skybridge there wouldn't be a concern because it's not blocking the views of anything important.

That's good info that I didn't know. Thanks. So, I'm assuming now that one of the main reasons for not developing The Grand America on that lot to the north of Little America is because of the view corridor of the City & County Building, or maybe the City didn't want a skybridge over 500 south.

Maybe I'm pushing my luck, but we should get 145 state added as well at 20-stories and 295FT. ( placing it between 222 south main and salt lake county building. )

I don't think he ever considered putting GA on the block north of LA.

I honestly see no value in merging the city & county. I like the uniqueness of Salt Lake that will certainly be lost by expanding the city limits all the way out to Draper.

I somewhat agree. I wish the city has incorporated nearby areas like Millcreek or Holladay, but I have no interest in Draper, Sandy, South Jordan, etc. They are just too different from SLC.

You are never going to see cities in the SL Valley combining unless it was state mandated. Each city/community has elected and appointed officials that love the power that each of them posseses. They have Police and Fire Chiefs and Planning Directors and other powerful employees whose position may not be needed once a city combines into another. You also have liberal leaders in SLC that would not want to combine with a more conservative area and dilute their existing power and vice versa.

Although I think it makes sense for cities to think and act more regionally, I do not think that you will see it in the near future.

SLC down $1.5 million after changes to downtown parking

It may cost more to park in downtown Salt Lake City, but the city doesn’t have extra cash to show for it. In fact, revenue is off by $1.5 million.

In 2012, rates went up 50 cents to $2 an hour. Enforcement hours increased to 8 p.m., and more automated kiosks were added.

"Parking is more available now than it was before we changed the hours," said Downtown Alliance Executive Director Jason Mathis last August.

The City Council projected the actions should have raised parking revenue by $1 million a year. But it’s now down by $1.5 million.

Doesn't surprise me, I can't tell you how many people I have guided through operating the new meters, also I remember the machines failing several times during the summer because of high temperatures. Parking is also cheaper in parking structures and many pay lots (if parking for over an hour)
