Too frequently, Tri-Cities politicians make it sound like we can only do one of three things with Riverview: reopen it for mental health treatment, preserve it for the heritage value and arboretum, or develop market housing - when the site is large and varied enough for all 3. Yes, some buildings are of enormous heritage value and some portions of the site have priceless collections of trees, but a great deal of the site is comprised of access roads, surface lots, empty lawns, and decrepit 50's buildings of no heritage value. There's plenty of space to preserve the valuable portions while developing market housing to finance new mental health programs.
