I'm writing something about the Utah Pantages Theatre, and came across this: http://utahpantagestheatre.com/ just a proposal from someone about renovating the Pantages. Most of it we've seen before, including the vintage photos of the interior.

What I really love is this PDF, which shows a restored "sister" Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis. It restored in 2002, and is absolutely beautiful. If we could even approach this with a renovation/restoration? It would be jaw-dropping. Course, I have to assume the Minneapolis one wasn't as completely gutted/ripped into two auditoriums like ours was...but still. This is gorgeous: http://utahpantagestheatre.com/wp-conten...ah-Pantages-Theatre-Mathews-Proposal.pdf The 100th Anniversary of the Pantages will be in 2018; How awesome would it be if they could have it restored by then? Or even announce then that they'll be restoring it? It's one of the local restoration projects that I'm most obsessed with.

...I don't know much about his numbers, or how realistic his proposal is. I just liked the pictures.

...and I just found this image gallery of the Minneapolis Pantages...if you want to drool some more - http://www.hennepintheatretrust.org/galleries/pantages-theatre-image-gallery

RosePark, I totally understand your sentiment regarding not being too hasty to cover something up that is not in vogue. For me there are certain eras, which have not aged well, and I fear will never be beautiful. That doesn't mean of course that everything designed in the 60's/70's era is horrid. While not our favorite for example, I would never want to cover up the façade of the Key Bank Tower(former Beneficial Life). The tower itself has only been enhanced by it's newly redeveloped and repurposed base. However, IMO most of that era will never endure the classic test of time of say a Tanner Jeweler, The old Dayne's Music Façade, etc., and the list is long.

They've been discussing the Pantages for a while now - at least for the last half-decade (if not longer). This seems like one of those lost projects that, every few years, receives publicity because someone wants to restore it, but for whatever reason, restoration never happens. But this looks like a different group has taken over the proposal (as originally, the website was www.theutahtheater.com - which no longer exists). So, hopefully they have better luck than the last guys.

My hope is that with the completion of the PAC and the renovation/expansion of Capital that the performing arts scene (live performance, musical theater, opera, dance etc) will hit a critical mass in downtown Salt Lake City. When that critical mass is hit, that could help to almost necessitate the remodeling of the Pantages.

I see the PAC as the CCH hotel of performing arts. The PAC will bring in bigger shows, and more shows. Creating more opportunities for people to be patrons of the arts. The more people attending shows, the more likely they are to want to see more, creating an even greater demand.

I wish I was at the point where I could donate to the cause of Pantages restoration, hopefully eventually.

Speaking of the Old Pantages/Utah Theater, How's this for a re-use:

I love mid-century design, but this isn't a good example of it. It looks more like a pre-fab warehouse.

And someone must have thought the Dinwoody Building was pretty hideous to cover it up. Look where that got SLC

I think restoring the theatre ought to be a very big priority, right after PAC and CCH.

Well, what they're doing to Ruth's Chris is not destroying the original facade and you can still see it behind what they're putting up. A huge difference. And I doubt they thought Dinwoody was hideous so much that they wanted it to look modern.

Remind me: Does the fudning for the UPAC also allocate some money for the resturation of the Utah Arts Center?

There was some talk of that. I don't know if it ever came about.

The new Zoins Bank Tower is Boise's new tallest.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here's the story on what Draper wants to do with the prison site. It's actually pretty impressive. I was previously thinking they'd just fill it with more sprawl, but the pictures with the story show they don't lack ambition.

I'd still prefer they not develop the site just because I'd rather see this growth in Salt Lake City itself (and because I can't imagine there being demand for this scale of development for a very long time), but it's an interesting vision nonetheless.

It looks good, but I'd be surprised if anything remotely like that develops there.

Draper just needs to focus on vista station and try not to make it look like another business park ( failing so far ) before they try to tackle this.

Yes, get that right first. Although, I'm not a fan of a 12-story building in the middle of nowhere, with only one street feeding it that goes past a single-family residential development.

I'm not even sure if vista station will ever get anything over six-stories. There's not really that many options of where to build more roads besides having one that goes under the rail line that takes you out south/east. I guess the idea is to get more people to use Frontrunner.

I spy Richard's Court, the Regent, the Cascade, and the building with Farr's Ice Cream in its base; Basically Draper wants to build another CCC.

Can someone please remind me again what the arguments for moving the prison are?
