I agree. Back to my original point, there are already some players in this market and look for residential campaigns soon.

IMO, some people hear Google Fiber and think a city becomes transformed and revolutionary.. Honestly, it's nothing more than Google finally getting in the game and wanting their own ultra high speed network. Their only option to do this is to rip up the land and lay their pipe.. Or piggy backing on companies that have been already been laying Optic Fiber for 20 years..

It just so happens that the current distribution technology has finally caught up to the same optic fiber that has been in the ground for years and they can now advertise gig speeds. Great timing for Google and hats off to them for taking their needs by the horns..

Kind of like when Apple decided to get into the phone business back in '07...

Well, the Mayor's Announcement was a total bust, but hopefully there will be good news soon regarding a CCH.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but obviously getting the bill past is one thing. A developer/brand have to take the state up on their offer. How long is that process likely to take?

Reports have said that there are several developers simply waiting for future tax assistance to become available. Once it is they will be more than willing to foot the bill to build the county more convention space, because the tax credit will be in place.

Well, you know how things change from point A-Z.. As long as this gets approved, built and is a tall SOB with all the bells and whistles, I think most folks around here will be happy.

There is also recent contruction of smaller hotels in this direct area, so the hotel situation in SLC near the convention center will be vastly improved if the CCH gets built.

I disagree with most and I think the announcement is a huge deal. Look at the cities that are being considered, I think it's great for the city to even be put in the same category as these cities. I think that it makes an impression on a national level and there were literally hundreds of cities that made application attempting to lure Google in.

Further, SLC is consistently losing out on new software and IT companies locating elsewhere in the metro area. For some reason, the Lehi/American Fork/Draper area is more attractive to these companies. We obviously can't pick up the city and move it but with Google fiber we will have much better internet/communication infrastructure at a reasonable cost. I think this will make a huge impact when SLC Economic Development is doing whatever they can to sell this city to new development.

I didn't expect the announcement to be about the CCH this soon, especially since the house hasn't even voted yet. Like many I would have rather had the announcement be development related but being a Google Fiber finalist certainly isn't a bad thing.

Right and before Google Fiber came to Provo, the existing firms offering gigabit fiber were charging $300 to $1000/mo. And even though there were existing fiber offerings, having Google Fiber is good for marketing, because people outside SLC will be impressed that we are a GF city. I don't think this is even remotely a lame announcement.

I very much agree, there's nothing lame about it. Of course, it's understood how much we're geared to brick and mortar on this forum. Google Fiber though is something that can only greatly encourage the acceleration of the kind of development Downtown we're all pining for.

From a marketing standpoint, I think Google Fiber is fantastic.. I never said it was a lame announcement.

They will hit the residential market much sooner than any other provider if SLC is a green light.

It's a big deal sure.......if Salt Lake wins out, but we are still 6-9 months of finding that out and I just think that "Major Announcement" should of waited till then, if we won out much like what Provo did.

Will Google Fiber get developers more willing to choose Salt Lake and develop buildings more like this?.........

And less of these?..........

Then I'm all for it.

But what I don't get is why is google making this into a competition and only picking ONE out of these nine cities? Just put it in all these cities. Going to happen sooner or later, right?

If the CCH is approved, hopefully it's a Westin that is built. Westin tends to have good looking hotels.

New York, NY

Lima, Peru

Charlotte, NC

Bellevue, WA

Or even a W Hotel would be cool. They have modern looking hotels across the country.

Austin, TX

Atlanta, GA

Or something like Hyatt Olive 8 in Seattle, WA

To my knowledge, Google never claimed that they were only selecting one city.

I've stayed in the Westin in Lima, Peru. It's a gorgeous building, inside and out, and is the tallest building in Lima, something Westin seemed intent on being, since Lima's earthquake danger calls for a height limit for the whole city. Maybe they'd feel the desire to be the tallest here in SLC as well.

If something similar to Phoenix's Sheraton gets built in SLC, it would be a shame...a damn shame!

Stop being a Debbie Downer. WE ARE NOT GETTING A PHX. mumbling under my breath, please don't let us get a phx, please don't let us get a phx, please don't let us get a phx.

Considering that the State, County and City are helping to make the thing a reality, I would imagine they will have at least some say in the design. As someone said a few pages back, I could go back and see who said it but that would take effort, Salt Lake City it self has shown some initiative in design over the past decade or so. The Public Library, and the Public Safety buildings. Add in 222, 111, 145 and City Creek and the newer architecture far and beyond getting a phx.

I refer to what I am doing as pessimistic reverse psychology.

We are getting a PHX, and that's final. It will be hideous.

I like that approach. If we're expecting a Phx, it doesn't matter what we get because absolutely any possible scenario will be better than a Phx, or if we get a Phx at least we were prepared.

I'd like the see this

W Dallas
openbuildings.com

But alas we all know we're getting a Phx. I'm with ya wrendog
