Please note, from the article, that Google announced that they are going to do a feasibility study to see if it's a good fit for the city. So it's a sure thing that we're getting it, although I would be surprised if they said, "No, it's not a good fit" lol

It's not a for sure thing about Google Fiber in SLC. SLC is just one of the cities they're looking and studying at.

Yeah...we're one of several "potentials." I wonder how many of those in the running will get it?

I would guess that San Jose, Portland, and Raleigh will get it.

Those cities and Austin (which already has Google Fiber) seem like the type of cities with people that would use it. They all have tech companies, young demographics, and are up and coming cities....something Google Fiber likes.

Surprisingly Seattle isn't listed...

Guess I called it, even when I was joking. Another lame overrated annoucement.

Without spilling the beans of who I work for. Let me just say SLC is already in the Gig fiber optic market and expanding.. Some areas are already "lit" for business customers in the SL valley..

Expect some national marketing/advertising and residential options in the near future..

Google Fiber is neat but not the only game in town..

But Google Fiber is the best, and most popular game in town.

Game over for similar smaller companies if Google Fiber comes to SLC, and expands in the SL Valley.

Yeah, Century Link is working on the fiber aspect as well. Customer service kind of sucks, though.

CCH comparison of size:

CCH will have 1,000+ rooms (I don't believe this in the bill, but a price of at least $200,000,000 is), which would be 85,000 sq. ft. of convention, exhibit, and meeting space. (The bill requires 85 sq. ft. per guest room)

The Grand America has 75,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and 775 rooms.

Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center has 60,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and 1,100 rooms.

While it's not talked about all that often, XMission is actually a very substantial player in the fiber market here in Salt Lake. Much more robust than iprovo was before Google Fiber bought them out.

If you want a cost comparison, the Denver Convention Center Hotel Authority, owner of the Hyatt Regency Denver, issued $356 million in bonds to meet the capital cost requirements for the project in 2003. If you want to add in an escalation factor, you can determine what a per-room estimate would be for the SLC Convention Center Hotel. Non-escalated would be $324K per room. Escalated would be approximately $400K per room.

A potential fiber city.

Yeah, wake me when they actually become one.

The Salt Lake County Mayor estimated the cost of the hotel to be much more than the language in the bill stated($200 million).

The hotel could cost about $335 million, something no developer will build without government help, McAdams has said.

That estimate is probably low for a 1,000 room hotel but probably accurate for an 800 room hotel.

You might want to do some homework. How do you define "best"? There are only so many "real" fiber networks in the USA and the companies that have them are Fortune 50 companies. Hardly "game over" for these companies. Everyone else that claims to have a fiber network is just piggy backing off one of these networks and charging mark up prices.

No doubt Google Fiber is a real deal and they are doing nice build outs in some USA cities but they hardly have market share control or anything close in the USA.

Like anything with technology, it doesn't take long for someone else to figure out a faster better way. Google Fiber is not the only game in town for this but it sure is doing wonders for their image right now.

Agreed. I thought this "Major Announcement" would of been about either the airport or the CCH. Why was THIS even a announcement to begin with? Salt Lake is a finalist, it's not even a for sure thing that Salt Lake will get google fiber and we won't know for at least another six months. Why are our so called "major announcements" always seem to be far less then what the hype is? This wasn't announcement worthy let alone Major announcement worthy.

The Tribune article linked above does a good job of explaining that there are already select companies in SLC that have that connection, and lists some of the providers that bring it to them. I have no doubt they'll continue to provide those services, and possibly better than Google Fiber does. If Google Fiber did come to town, it has the potential to transform businesses across the city.
