This theory may suck, but it has come about because practice has shown that we are no good at replicating the building methods and materials used in the past. Instead, we get modern replicas that cannot match the historic nature of the building and instead look "Disney-ified" in the face of the real thing. How many decades has it been since someone actually built a building with a cast-iron facade? It's not just a matter of going to Home Depot and getting parts to match the Lit Bros facade.
I think this is the right approach, as much as I think the design for the tower is a tad too bland.
