nevermind, I can see the brackets go down... definitely not just for shades.

Yeah, they looks like the small brackets used for fins on the MNP Tower. Thought these may be for something similar.

So this building has openable windows on the east and west sides. I take it that's so the air conditioning use is reduced?

May be somewhat of a necessity since it has geothermal heating and cooling which I don't think allow for rapid adjustments.

Floors of the big cube and the balconies have been installed. First strip of light coloured cladding above the cube for the full width of the tower.

First angled beams are up on the west side.

I'm glad they're actually doing the bridge/podium element in steel. I was convinced they're going with standard Vancouver concrete / fakery with the window millions to achieve the beam effect.

New guy warning here in advance of asking if anyone can tell me what the cube is for and how it will be clad.

I know it's lazy of me, but I only checked out the last couple of pages — I didn't want to read all 58 pages to find out.

In the words of the architect, the cubes are meant to be "cantilevered 4-storey sky gardens." In other words, they're silly add-on elements meant to create "visual interest" and reflect Vancouver's so-called "green" culture. You'll notice that several towers in Vancouver have protruding boxes (e.g., Shangri-La), though none as prominent as this. In my opinion, I think they're ugly, tacky, unoriginal, and detract from the uniformity of the buildings.

I think Shangri-La, Woodwards, and Fairmont are well done. These ones aren't so cool. If they formed a multi-story skybridge over the street between two buildings that would be cool, but they hold no "visual interest" merit on their own IMO.

Thanks for the responses.

Given that it's Telus, maybe instead of a 'sky garden' they should make it into a 'sky zoo' — it could be a home for their cute pandas, lizards, birds and other such creatures that are featured in their commercials.

Could be a lot more interesting… and relevant!

I'm reserving judgement until they are done, but they seem like they might make pretty cool spaces for taking a break if you work in the towers. Every building I've worked in with "visual interest" spaces that involve big, open glass ceiling spaces have kind of been my favourite place for meals and thinky work. I guess what I'm trying to say is even if the aesthetics aren't the best, it seems like a nice user feature.

(And design is the fusion of aesthetics and use, right?)
