some photos I took of E. 5th and Seaholm district. I am IN LOVE with those new benches. I suggest checking out the brew & brew for coffee and walking around. Corazon is going to be a very beautiful low-rise when complete.

The benches are fantastic. How did they feel to sit in?

Some other great benches in town are in front of the new federal courthouse. Great lines and feel so nice to sit in. Lots of lumbar support.

I parked on 5th and Waller the other day. I laughed because that nice sidewalk and planters are alongside the back of buildings. It's like a glorified alley. Are they going to do anything in that area?

It looks like the benches without the backs are designed to keep vagrants from laying down on them. As far as plans for that area, the AAS reported that the city is hoping for commercial and residential development.

I frequent an automotive paint and body shop supply business at 5th and Navasota and the owner is NOT at all happy about the new sidewalks. They used to have about 20 parking spaces for employees, customers, and delivery vehicles and they were almost always at capacity. Now with the sidewalks and planters they are down to two on street parking spaces total.

yeah, they're looking for a developer to create a TOD. When complete it'll be a dense lil' pocket of the eastside.

They didn't "use to have" anything. That was public space, not the property of any particular business.

Don't you think that's just a bit argumentative?

This business has, presumably for years, been making extensive and exclusive private use of a scarce public resource. The original poster mentioned employees, so presumably multiple spaces were taken all day, every day. And now they're the ones that are "NOT happy".

He also said customers and delivery vehicles. And there's nothing against workers parking there. Like you said, it's public space. It's not like they roped off the area. There were plenty of spots to go around. Now there's not. It's ok for them to be upset by it.

But I don't care either way that much. I was just pointing out that you were arguing a point that is already understood by everyone (it's public space).

I was just pointing out that while the new sidewalks and planters look nice. They are not appropriate for the current industrial use of that area and are hurting local businesses. It seems as though they have put the cart before the horse in making this area TOD. That stretch of East 5th wasn't pretty but it was very busy. Now it just looks kind of odd.

Looking at that pic, I'm guessing they were just going for the low-hanging fruit. Sidewalks in the vicinity of the blocks they want to revitalize, without a bunch of current logistical hassles. It might be too early, but it's also so cheap it's hard to pass up the opportunity.

Found on reddit. Posting at full resolution. I hope that's fog, not smog, but I suspect it's not. Makes me sad. Also, you can see Seaholm's progress pretty well.

I'm pretty sure that is fog actually, or at least wintertime humidity/cloudiness. Also, I'm betting that was taken over the weekend. The air looked just like that this weekend. There was a lot of fog over the weekend in the morning, but there was also something in the air as that cold front came through. My throat was sore Sunday afternoon.

We left Austin Sunday morning at 6 am to drive up to Waco, and downtown was gone - in the fog. It was foggy all the way to Waco and until about noon. At one point we could see less than 100 feet ahead of us on I-35, and that was a bit scary. It was amazing to see as the sun came up the fog bank hovering above the horizon. It was completely clear above the fog. I could even see Venus that morning, but the fog bank was like a low mountain range. The fog was so think it was forming water droplets on our windows.

I love the aerial pictures of Austin, especially, obviously, the current ones. As I look over this one, I couldn't help but notice what a crappy looking performance center we have, at least on the outside. The inside is beautiful.

That would be a really good photo to use to draw in all the new buildings or place in the renderings. It shows almost every new building lot. I'm no good at that kind of stuff, though, unfortunately.

I have a mission for any one of you.

One of these days if someone could get an updated shot of the skyline from Barton Creek Square, that'd be awesome. It's one of my favorite views of the skyline out of all of them. Night or day, whichever you like/can do, I'd much appreciate it. THANKS!

Once I'm moved down there next month I'll have to pop over myself to take in the view.

EDIT: So wait, this view I speak of is not from the mall but it's near/behind the mall, I think? It's the view as shown in this link:

http://robgreebon.photoshelter.com/i...0005ChiZ1zeEuk

where am I thinking of?

That was taken from along Southwest Parkway which is in Southwest Austin, but not quite near the mall. My best guess is that it was taken from one of the parking garages at the AMD Campus on Southwest Parkway. The address is 7171 Southwest Parkway. Click on the link below and view it in street view. As you start down the hill the office buildings are on the right and downtown is on the left.

Is it just me or do those tree planters(I think that is the word) look way to big for the size of the sidewalk?
