From News 88.9

" Shovels will soon be in the ground in Millidgeville as construction starts on a new data centre."

I'm interested to know where in Millidgeville this is being built.

Also, Budget 2014 has set aside 200K for a feasibility study for Patridge Island breakwater (to make it accessible) and more money has been devoted to the Princess of Acadia, along with the other Maritime ferries (Madeleine-PEI & PEI-Nova Scotia).

That's encouraging news for ferry fans like me!

Maybe behind their current location in Millidgeville.

Maybe they should have put it in or above the empty parking garage.

I'm still a little confused by that budget announcement, given that there was a previous breakwater access engineering study done about 6-7 years ago (I know this because I was on the advisory committee). Seems like we're going to re-do the same work that was already done, most of which pointed to the ludicrous cost of building any sort of permanent road on the breakwater. I definitely want to see the island become a tourist draw someday, but IMO we have a whole list of lower cost, higher return projects that should be accomplished first.

Based on the photographs and knowing what land is available in Millidgeville I would envision this to be close to their current location and/or the Air Canada center.

Perhaps the $200k would be better spent upgrading the breakwater.

Totally agree Kwajo! This is a waste of money!

New Plans For Exhibition Park

With the snow a meter deep throughout the city, the thought of an indoor fieldhouse where kids could play sports year round sounds like a great idea to some people.

The idea of such a fieldhouse at Exhibition Park has been around for a while but now it's getting new traction, with Frank McCarey of the Exhibition Park Association telling common council the fieldhouse would be great for the local community and also to host regional and even national sports competitions.

Meanwhile, some councillors expressed concern that we already have too many recreational facilities that aren't being kept up as well as they could be.

Council will hear back from a committee on the idea this spring.

Small Expedition Ships To Have Home Port In SJ

Saint John is one step closer to becoming a home port with a $300,000 investment by the provincial government in updating the port for expedition class ships.

That money is to help ready the Port to have cruise ships depart from here. Tourism Minister Trevor Holder tells CHSJ News we'll start small with so-called expedition class ships, which typically have 50 to 200 people and crew on board.

Holder says the hope is that the Saint John airport will be able to attract more flights at cheaper rates once business takes off.

A new floating dock will need to be built off the Pugsley wharf.

The smaller ships that could depart from here would head to destinations like Alma, Campobello, and even some destinations on the Saint John River, like Gagetown.

Cathedral launches major restoration project
20 per cent of 10 million dollar goal already raised

Alison Clements Feb 18, 2014 08:00:40 AM

SAINT JOHN, N.B.- $10-million dollars is the goal of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception restoration project.

The 5-year fundraiser will also raise money to revitalize the Waterloo Village community.

Campaign Chair Geoff Flood says the repairs to the church are estimated to cost $6-million to $8-million dollars. “The Cathedral needs a new roof and needs some repairs to the building envelope just to put it in good shape for the next fifty years”, says Flood. “Yes it is a lot(of money) but it’s something that’s needed to keep that building where it is”.

20 percent of the campaign’s goal has already been reached through donation from the public and the business community.

I have not seen too may details around this initiative but I think it has the potential to be quite significant for Saint John. Very exciting.

We have a jewel with the Saint John river for tours, ect. I think this idea with proper marketing could be a huge winner for Southern New Brunswick
