It's really great to see frequent updates on this project from the city, with descriptions of what is happening and even definitions of unusual terms. Much better than just a pile of pictures like Metrolinx does in the GTA (Though more pictures are always appreciated).

I assume that when they're referring to Coventry Bridge, they're actually talking about the Belfast Rd. bridge over the Queensway. Is that correct? Is that it's official name? Because there are no bridges on Coventry Rd.

No, they're talking about the new pedestrian bridge between the Train station and Coventry.

I expect you are right. I drove by there yesterday and they are working on it. I hope it turns out better than the South Keys pedestrian bridge.

Update: Giant sinkhole closes Laurier Avenue; LRT tunnelling suspended

By Meghan Hurley, OTTAWA CITIZEN February 21, 2014 12:16 PM

OTTAWA — A large sinkhole closed the intersection of Laurier Avenue East and Waller Street and stopped tunnelling work on the East Portal of the city’s LRT project early Friday morning.

The City of Ottawa said in a statement Waller Street collapsed around 1 a.m. just south of Laurier Avenue East.

The cause of the sinkhole that police say is about eight metres wide has not been determined.

Crews from the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) were working on site but no one was injured. Twenty-four hour tunnelling work had just begun on the LRT East Portal site on Wednesday. The last position report on the official LRT site was dated Feb. 9 and said the tunnel crew was “approaching Laurier” as the tunnel made its way north along Waller Street.

Tunnelling operations were suspended for an investigation and engineers were on the scene to assess the ground conditions.

The city said crews were filling the sinkhole with concrete to stabilize it.

The city was to hold a technical briefing about the sinkhole at 1 p.m. Friday. A Friday afternoon media event for the Confederation Line has been cancelled.

Residents at 50 Laurier Ave. were without water as a result of the sinkhole.

Eastbound Laurier Avenue between Queen Elizabeth Drive and Waller Street is closed to traffic.

LRT tunnelling likely cause of Waller Street sinkhole: city

By David Reevely and Meghan Hurley, OTTAWA CITIZEN February 21, 2014 9:30 PM

OTTAWA — Tunnelling under Waller Street for the city’s light-rail project is the only explanation anyone has yet for why a sinkhole opened up near the intersection of Waller and Laurier Avenue, deputy city manager Nancy Schepers said Friday afternoon.

A section of road about three metres by three metres collapsed around 1 a.m. just south of Laurier. Waller is closed there for the rail project and isn’t travelled, though the city closed the nearby intersection while the cause of the collapse is investigated.

Leaking pipes, typically water mains, are the most frequent cause of sinkholes, as slow trickles of water wear away at underground soil and then the surface falls in all at once. But the only pipe running through the area is a small sewer and there’s no indication there was anything wrong with it until the collapsing ground broke it, according to the city.

“At this point, we cannot confirm its root cause,” Schepers said of the sinkhole at a news conference 12 hours after the collapse. The tunnelling is the obvious thing to look to, she said.

For now, there’s no reason to expect the sinkhole to spread, she said. “Monitoring equipment has confirmed that the impact is localized and the geotechnical team has not identified any safety concerns at this point.”

The first sign of trouble came at about 10 p.m. Thursday, according to Tim Stewart, the construction director for the city’s rail contractor, Rideau Transit Group. Miners, who’d just started 24-hour-a-day work on the tunnel there the previous day, noticed “material” falling from the top of the face where a massive digging machine called a roadheader was clawing away at the earth under Waller. They stopped digging and watched for a short time, and when the sand and debris kept coming down, they pulled the roadheader back and got out, Stewart said.

Nobody was hurt. Once the sinkhole stopped growing, crews filled it with concrete to stabilize it, work that needed to be done before inspectors could get close enough to start figuring out exactly what happened.

“It’s early for us. We’re continuing to analyze what happened and why it happened,” Stewart said. “We have ensured that our operation is safe.”

The roadheader (“Crocodile Rouge” is the nickname given to this one) is safely away from the collapse, he said.

The east portal for the rail tunnel is being dug in the soft ground of Sandy Hill and it’s been the subject of constant assessments and reassessments as tunnelling has progresses, with engineers determining just how much support the roof of the tunnel needs as the digging goes on. In that spot, the roof of the tunnel had been supported with horizontal pilings and a layer of “shotcrete,” a form of concrete that’s sprayed on with a hose, Stewart said. The tunnelling is 15 to 20 metres from hitting the hard bedrock that’s under most of downtown Ottawa, where the digging is expected to get simpler.

Tunnelling at the west portal near Bronson Avenue and at a central shaft near Queen and Lyon streets is already in bedrock and is continuing, Schepers said. The mess at the east portal is Rideau Transit Group’s problem for now, she said, because unless it turns out the city was somehow at fault, the contract with the construction consortium makes risks associated with the tunnelling part of the $2.1-billion deal.

“RTG is fully engaged in first containing and mitigating the impact, secondly in identifying the cause, and finally in putting forward a plan to resume tunnelling operations in the area when it’s safe to do so,” Schepers said.

Sinkhole filled, traffic may return to normal Monday

By Tom Spears, OTTAWA CITIZEN February 22, 2014 1:12 PM

OTTAWA — Workers have filled in the downtown sinkhole that was likely caused by LRT tunnelling, and the area’s city councillor says traffic may roll on all lanes of Laurier Avenue East by Monday.

But there’s still work to be done, Mathieu Fleury cautioned:

• Engineers have to inspect the filling to make sure it’s stable;
• Traffic signals aren’t hooked up yet;
• An apartment building at 50 Laurier Ave. East still doesn’t have complete sewer connections, though service has been on and off.

Still, the work went fast.

A section of road about three metres by three metres collapsed about 1 a.m. Friday just south of Laurier. Waller Street is closed there for the rail project and isn’t travelled, though the city closed the intersection while the cause of the collapse is investigated.

There has been no sinkhole under Laurier itself.

Fleury notes that LRT construction “is the biggest contract the city has ever awarded.”

The sinkhole that opened under Waller Street delayed underground tunnelling that is supposed to be going 24 hours a day, so Rideau Transit Group was motivated in repairing the damage as soon as possible, he said.

When all that is done, it will take a “final coat” of asphalt on the road, Fleury said.

Asked when the nearby intersection with Laurier Avenue would reopen, he said Monday looks like a safe prediction, and he hopes it could even reopen before that.

Unlike the sinkhole on Highway 174 in September 2012, this one does not appear to be caused by underground water eroding soil. City officials say LRT tunnelling probably caused the Waller collapse. The area is built on loose, sandy soil.

Why are they using that type of machine instead of a conventional circular TBM?

It's my understanding that this method is cheaper. Although it is slower, the tunnel construction isn't the limiting factor for the overall project. I'm also under the impression that this method allows the mining out of the stations from underground, limiting surface interruptions, though I'm not sure why that wouldn't be possible with TBMs as well.

Makes me wonder if this method is more prone to collapse. It seems logical that it would be since a TBM supports the tunnel while it excavates and set the precast wall shells in place directly behind it.
