I finished clearing the remaining Post office property 2 weeks ago. The asbestos removal will finish by Sept thus the wrecking call begin.

They say they'll be doing foundation work all winter.

Edmonton – Construction is underway on the new Royal Alberta Museum.

Representatives from all levels of government were on hand Friday morning for the start of construction on the project.

“It was a tough road to get to approval and so that’s just what makes today’s sod turning all the sweeter, is that eventually it did come together,” explained Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. “We got the support of Ottawa and the province and this is going to be a wonderful addition to Edmonton.”

“It’s about partnerships that can do projects like this,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit.

The new museum is expected to cost $340 million, which includes $122 million from the Federal Building Canada Fund program.

It’s being constructed at 103 Avenue and 98 Street, which is the former site of the Old Canada Post Office Building.

Are there problems with the live cam for the last few days. It is nice to be able to watch it on cam even when you are far from Edmonton.

“I’m very much scratching my head,” said Tom Hennes, founding principal of Thinc Design, an exhibition design firm that has worked on projects around the world, including the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Thinc Design won a bid through Alberta Infrastructure and was hired in spring 2012 to design the RAM’s galleries.

“I did a little bit of research and found out there was an incredible cultural richness in Alberta,” Hennes said over the phone from New York Monday. “I thought it was a wonderful opportunity.”

Concerned about the aboriginal history component of the exhibit, he reached out to Alberta’s indigenous communities. According to Hennes, that’s when his company’s contract with RAM was terminated.

“I can’t really say what happened because we’ve never been given a reason for the termination,” Hennes explained. “What I can say is that we were working very deeply with the indigenous community, trying to broaden that process to include a much greater diversity of people in the indigenous community.”

RAM’s executive director said the museum decided to take a different approach in the galleries.

“The contract was terminated through language that both parties had accepted,” said Chris Robinson. “The foundation work that Thinc had done: we are using that as we go forward.”

Robinson said the museum has since consulted with several First Nations communities.

Thinc Design can fill out a form, pay the fee, and receive all the documents relating to their contract from the government if they wish. The government can't release these to defend its actions due to commercial and privacy reasons.
