The Canucks have always been slow out of the gate the last few years, this is why there is a chance they will not make the play-offs in this very short season, while the Oilers on the other hand who are young, dumb, and full of some, will come charging out of the gate and it may be enough to propel them into the play-offs. Oilers will probly win tonight.

I made fun of the Canucks last year for their slow start and they ended up winning the Presidents Trophy.

I did a tour of Rogers Arena yesterday btw. Enemy in hostile territory.

Canucks should have taken that last night... our PK was brutal and your puck control was much better. Dubs looked good and you guys seemed to run out of steam.

Looks like the Canucks will have their affiliate in Abbotsford for next season. The Heat are on their way out, the Canucks are buying the Blues' AHL franchise, and relocating them to Abbotsford.

St. Louis will then affiliate with the Chicago Wolves.

Long overdue. Putting the Flames' farm team in the lower mainland was an incredibly stupid idea. Attendance will rise dramatically. (I know I'm really going out on a limb on that one)

I have to agree that attendance will rise, because there will be local affiliation with the parent club - the canucks. and it makes sense because it wouldn't cost too much calling up the players, and would only take an hour to get the player from Abby to Van. Win win for the Canucks. Smart move by the organization.

I wonder if this could be a path for Surrey? The Abbotsford arena only holds 7000 people. I'm sure the team could average more than 7000, considering the Vancouver Giants average around 7000 per game, and have averaged well into the 8k's. It seems there would be more opportunity for the organization as a whole to be in a bigger venue and bigger market (Surrey).

Last year Abottsford ranked 29 out of 30 teams in league attendance.

I don't get it from a Flames perspective. Apparently they're gonna have the team in Utica, NY instead? They've got a guaranteed no-loss deal with Abbotsford, I don't get why they would give it up.

Tom Mayenknecht spoke openly about this on the Team 1040 yesterday. There is no official announcement yet, but Tom is an insider in the business world and generally knows what he's talking about.

Apparently in Utica it has been reported that the deal to move the Heat to Utica is completed. Utica has been pursuing this for over a year, and one has to assume that Utica offered Calgary an even sweeter deal than the no-loss deal currently in Abbotsford.

Tom said that the Canucks have plans in place to immediately buy the Peoria Rivermen (currently affiliated with St. Louis) and move them to Abbotsford for next season, rather than renew their expiring agreement with Chicago Wolves.

St. Louis would then make an affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves (who are independently owned). Apparently this kind of shuffle is not too unusual in the AHL world. There are no "extra" AHL franchises, so they all end up affiliated with some team, but the relationships do change every so often.

Absolutely NO need for any additional arenas SoF.

You have Chilliwack with a 5000 seat arena that had the WHL, lost the WHL in 2011, and now has the BCHL Chiefs in which the team averages about 2000 fans per game (40% percentage), which I should note is far away #1 in attendance in the BCHL

You have Abbotsford with a 7000 seat arena that has the AHL (Heat), and averages about 3500 fans per game (50% percentage of the arena). With the Canucks farm team, they should average well over 5000 fans a game.

You have Langley, with their 5500 seat arena that has the BCHL that gets no real events outside of BCHL and Trinity Western, plus some minor league tournaments, plus their BCHL Rivermen which average 1200 fans per game (20% capacity) As well, it's located minutes away from East Surrey (on 200 Street)

All arenas, minus Abbotsford (if they had the Canucks farm team in town), are too big, and are un-necessary for their size.

If the Pacific Coliseum was deemed inadequate, unsafe, or the PNE wanted to redevelop the site, there may be a case for a secondary rink in Surrey City Centre to replace that arena, but at present, the last thing Surrey needs to do is join the arena bandwagon and copy Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and Langley.

I have a question about AHL farm team shuffles, what happens to the players? I assume those with an AHL only contract stay on their respective teams why ones with an NHL contract get moved to the new AHL team.

I stopped following hockey in any real sense in the summer of 2011. I worked for the team for five years and breathed hockey since childhood but that series broke my will.

The (fans) broke mine. The team certainly hasn't helped. To me the biggest current issue with the team is the ownership. I don't see things improving and I won't support the them, I also don't see the team being sold any time soon so it sucks.

why would you want the team to be sold? we've got local ownership. that's a good thing.

as for ownership improving the team. we're talking about the canucks, right? not the whitecaps? lol. cause i've got a bigger issue with caps ownership as being cheap. you can't really say that about canucks ownership. they've paid their players quite well. and they've spent to the cap every year for the last at least 3-5 years...
