Although, come to think of it, I think The Sheepdogs was the last act I saw there and that was in late 2012, so maybe I won't really miss it too much...
I was going to say the Majestic, but after they were sold a few years ago not much has happened there. The Rockhouse is probably next up on the venue list; Said the Whale played there back in November. They're a pretty middle-of-the-popularity band...not big enough to sell out Mile One, but big enough to get a moderate showing. Even though that place isn't really big enough for those types of events people get crammed in there like sardines.

I wish Club One would stay as Club One. Not a big fan of a Hooters on George.

Not a big fan of hooters on George street either.. Kinda destroys the unique local atmosphere with a cross-continental chain restaurant.

This is the cost of unregulated commercial development; Our streetscape and local commerce diluted by mainland franchises with economies of scale that are daunting to compete with.

San Francisco bans all large scale, corporate franchises from it's inner city neighbourhoods.

It's really a disservice to our local entrepreneurs, but also the cultural history on George Street.

This is just another example in a trajectory of American style consumerism domineering local enterprise, using St. John's consumers as a cash cow, parasitically capitalizing without contributing to our society (other than providing cheap, generic goods and services). Other examples can be found on Stavanger Drive, Kelsey Drive, and scattered throughout the city.

Along with natural resources, let's add our integrity to our list of exports.

I noticed that when I was there a few years back. It was great! Instead of eating at generic chain restaurants I was forced out of my comfort zone and got to experience all the local cultures and flavors. It was fantastic! Outside of New York, San Fran is my second favorite US city. It's basically a ginormous St. John's with better weather! I'm planning to go back on vacation soon and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting place to visit!

I tried Mary's Diner couple of months ago. It was pretty good actually. It was like a real diner experience with menu's, waitress and retro 50's decor. They also have a regular take out section there too if you want chicken to go.

I had Rio with Coworkers last week. The selection wasn't the greatest, but I'll chalk that up to them just opening and slowly ramping up. Our server even apologized to us and told us the selection will grow.

Quality seemed decent; not quite equal to Brazilian Steakhouse I've had elsewhere, but not something to keep me from going back.

Pretty certain someone posted this some time ago. It was known back in August of 2013 that this was happening.

I think there was a post some time back that BP was going in the building west of 351, where Statoil is. There was some other restaurant (Italian??) slated to go in 351.
We will all be 300 lbs with all these restaurants opening...assuming we have the money!

Chain restaurants heading downtown

So, BP is the newest announcement. As it stands now, this spring/summer will see significant chains like BP, Hooters & Jack Astor's all open up new locations in Downtown St John's.

As a twice annual visitor to Mount Pearl (in-laws), I think that the local bars & restaurants in & around George St, Water St & Duckworth St are what makes trips into Downtown great. What do some of you local residents think? Should the chains stay to the suburbs in St John's? Are the chains a welcome addition into downtown and is there room for more?

I for one prefer one-off restaurants and smaller local chains but do visit these bigger chain restaurants from time to time. I do believe there is a place for chains in the downtown for the majority of people that do like them and for visitors to the city looking for something familar. I wouldn't want to see an over-saturation of big national and international chain restaurants downtown, but I think adding a few is a great idea.

Bring on a Hard-Rock Cafe! lol

I agree. The local bars and restaurants are what make downtown St. John's what it is. I don't think the addition of a few chain restaurants will be bad as it will give a familiar choice to timid tourists and draw people who just want a generic chain restaurant meal to the downtown. The problem comes if we start seeing more and more pop up in the downtown. These chain restaurants can offer meals at a cheaper price and I would hate to see them taking away business from our great selection of local restaurants located in the heart of downtown. I say they're alright to a certain point. If they start affecting small business owners and taking away from our local economy/culture then that is too far!

I still want a Mcdonalds on water street though haha

Excellent! We had seen plans in the dusty windows of that building for BP but it was also thought it may go in 351. Will be great to see this building renovated.
