montreal's downtown always kind of wandered along st. paul, through victoria square, and up the hill toward the west end. it made for an expansive core, but not one that ever cohered into the sort of hyper-density that big pre-war downtowns are known for.

montreal in general kind of wanders and meanders, always dipping out of view or splitting itself into discrete sections. you always feel like you are in the center of your particular part of montreal, but its connection to the greater city is somehow less-than-visible.

Back when Windsor station mattered. Much of the buildings in the lower half this picture have since been butchered to make way for giant parking lots that are only starting to be filled up now.

^ It's a shame Montreal's streetcars were ripped up. It made for a more big city feel.

Two shots of Montreal in 1832 from île Ste-Hélène below. Note that the city is limited mostly to Old Montreal, and the current downtown is still rural. It had around 30,000 people at the time.

Downtown's west side. Mid 70's. See the blighted Griffintown in the lower half of the frame.

Couldn't agree more. Even in the 60s, they were generally urban right up to the water's edge. By the 90s it was though that had never existed, with large barren wastelands separating the built-up part of the city from the water.

@Rico: Spectacular photos. The over-the-top modernity of Montreal in the 60s and early 70s was really something else.

Very fascinating view of Montreal sometime in the late 1950s. Interesting to note which buildings are no more (Laurentian Hotel, Windsor Hotel, Tour Drummond, Architects Building, all the buildings on the site of present day Place Ville-Marie, etc).

Those 1961 shots of Montreal are awesome with PVM & CIBC racing each other - instant skyline.

Wow! Great post franktko! The last picture confuses me a bit. It looks as though part of the port is a stone's throw from Windsor Station and downtown. Where was it taken?

Also, I would like to remind everyone to include the sources of the images (please link to the page the image was on rather than the image's URL). Thanks.

I assume it must have been taken from the canal. Sorry about the sources: http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread_archive.asp?fid=9&threadid=74219&currpage=1

Looks like this dock, with cars and buses parked on it... http://www.app.catbus.ca/1947satelliteview/app.html#18;45.48924391679481;-73.55936401350021
