I think something like Pioneer Square in Portland, OR would be cool for the location where the Carl's Jr. is and that Eat-a-burger place. Click on the link for the photos.

I think it would help the area as well. You could have food carts, mini concerts, etc. in something like a Pioneer Square in SLC. I think it would be even more cool thing to have once the performing arts center, 151, and 111 are all complete. It would kind of be in the center of the downtown area of SLC.

...but that'd be literally across the street from the Gallivan Center, where there are daily lunchtime concerts, evening concerts during the summer, starting to see more food carts, etc...it's there, and it's been gaining momentum.

In which way has it been gaining momentum?

I agree. We already have a public space that takes up most of a block.
I know this might take the plants aligning but I have always thought that would be the perfect spot for a 50+ story building and think something like that is what should be there.
Maybe I just imagined it but wasn't there a 40+ story building planned for that site a few decades ago that didn't work out? Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

In the ways he stated, but I'll say it again! The brown bag concert series, food truck Thursdays, Evening Concerts, Movie Monday's, food festivals, Ice Skating and multiple venues for public or private events.

Interesting fact. Let's compare the programming for Gallivan and Pioneer Square. February: Obviously there's Ice Skating most every night, (except when closed for Private Events) the food trucks are there every Thursday and their are two evening concerts, one on the 13th and one on the 27th. While Pioneer Square has a whole one event planned in February, Monday on the Mall on the 10th.

How about March: Gallivan; Food Truck Thursdays, and four evening concerts in the Month. Pioneer Square; ..............

So before you go saying Gallivan doesn't have any momentum and doesn't compare you might want to double check. They are both very nicely designed public spaces in the downtown of their respective cities, but Gallivan obviously has much more going on as far as organized events/programming.

Feel free to compare any other month. Particularly the summer months.

Gallivan, especially the remodeled update is a fantastic public venue, even from my L.A. perspective. In fact, we would be overjoyed to have it here in Downtown L.A. Not sure how anyone could dismiss it, unless they're pretty much unfamiliar with it. Perhaps very young, or trolling and maybe not really from the Wasatch Metro???

Gallivan Plaza is very much in use. Went down there 2 weeks ago and had a date with my wife where we went ice skating and the place was very busy. I don't think we are in need of another public square in Salt Lake.

I like Gallivan. It's much better than what it used to be - a mostly desolate area beyond just the reach of concerts and ice skating. The problem I have with Gallivan is that much of the area around it continues to be underutilized.

Gallivan Avenue could be more than it is. And I would have loved to see a residential, mixed-use development fronting 200 South.

I was not dissing the Gallivan or trying to troll. Wow, some people need to chill out. I simply asked, in what ways has it gained momentum? I am not too familiar with it.

This is exactly why I want to see a residential development on the Eat-a-Burger location, while I initially said something 8-15, imagine a very slender 20-30 story building on that site. For instance the base dimensions of the Cascade nearly fit onto the eat a burger and parcels north. Eat-a-burger and the three mostly vacant parcels to the north are 93 (2nd) x 173 (Regent), while the base of the Cascade is 118 x 100. Another Cascade style residential tower would be so cool across from Gallivan.

I think the LaPorte project will help with more people using Gallivan on a regular basis, in a hang out passive sort of way.

A residential tower on the Carl's Jr. lot would be most ideal, IMO. Especially if you had balconies facing Gallivan Plaza.

I actually agree. Something like this would be cool.

It's not too tall but yet it keeps that urban feel and it has those balconies your are talking about, Orlando.

Sorry, Carl's Jr. site is reserved for a new tallest only. That tower can go somewhere else, though.

Well then how about this mix apartment/hotel

This is the W Hotel in Austin. It also has apartments mixed into it as well.

I work at One Utah and in the summer months there is somethign going on at the plaza every day. Also just about every space is now occupied on Gallivan Ave with restaurants. I'm not a fan of the eateries but for over a decade the spaces sat mostly empty. Now there's a Thai place which is good, and two hippy eateries, something called Grilla Bites and another one called From Scratch. We most decidedly do not need another public space park across the street. Progress is being made all along Main St and once the NPAC comes on line about the only vacancy along Main in the formerly desolate 100 to 200 South block will be the Utah Theater and the old Southam Gallery next to Lamb's. Main St. still needs MORE affordable residential.

Im a huge advicate of mixed use buildings.. I think it would be a great way to get some taller structures going up!!

I think they should have made 111 about 10 stories taller and added some hotell space.. Would have been great for preformers!!
