The transcontinental railroads were similar in that they sold farmland at a profit and also ensured they had a monopoly on transportation to the areas they'd developed. I don't know whether their transportation divisions alone were profitable, though, and I know that for some interurban and urban railroads like the LA Red Cars they were not.

Broadway Subway

It is anticipated that the Campus Lands will be the primary staging area for the tunnel boring machine and associated operations for the construction of the Broadway Subway (Figure 7). In 2011, as part of the evaluation of a new SkyTrain alignment, TransLink identified a staging area required for construction. During the Structure Planning process, City staff along with GNWC Trust worked with TransLink and their consultants to refine the 2011 staging area with site planning and grading options that minimize impacts to both Broadway Subway construction and the development aspirations of the GNWC Trust.

The analysis presented a modified staging area (see Figure 7) and identified impacts to phase one, pre-SkyTrain development sites. The City and the GNWC Trust are currently working together to find a balanced solution which mitigates the impacts of the proposed staging area on GNWC Trust’s development program but provides certainty for the successful construction of the Broadway Subway which will extend the Millennium Line westward.

People were saying the same thing about the TBM from Canada Line ending up for the Evergreen Line but we all know that didn't happen. Chances are, a brand new TBM will need to be ordered for the Broadway Line.

Every TBM is designed for the soil conditions it will be boring through, and I doubt the soil under Clarke Road and the eastern slopes of Burnaby Mountain would be similar enough to Broadway to be able to use the same machine.

I also suspect that this machine already has other projects on its 'dance card' for the next few years, so it will be dis-assembled and shipped to its next tunnel project as quickly as possible after the Evergreen tunnel is finished.

Also remember that neither the Province nor TransLink owns the TBMs - it's owned or leased by the contractor hired to build the tunnel.

Unless that contractor is hired for the Broadway Line, then there's no link between the two projects.

The Canada Line boring machines were here on lease and then sent off to Russia for a project there.

Other cities like Toronto may do things differently (they seem to contract out piecemeal, rather than on a project-wide basis), so in the case of TTC, they may actually own their TBMs.

Oh we all know it will be SNC Lavalin, S.E.L.I. Canada and so on that will be the contractors of the Broadway Line, essentially the same group doing the Evergreen Line. They will of course, form another consortium and likely call it BLRT Construction with Bombardier supplying the rolling stock. There! I called it!

The Broadway line will also be able to use a much smaller TBM just 5-5.3m in diameter, vs. Canada Line's 6.1m.
