I felt bad for the workers, its a shitty week to start with the sub 20 degree weather.

So this took what, a year and a half from proposal to construction? Similar proposal on NCC land a few blocks north east on Queen and it's been what, 6 years and still nothing? I get that the Re is much more expensive (not that it's worth all that much more), but come on!

Note, I'm not including the original office proposal in the timeline.

I'm excited for this one because I think it will look nice with the glass and black casing. However, what truly sucks, is that this will have no impact on our skyline what so ever... Nothing ever changes our Skyline really... the only changes being things like Cathedral Hill, Performance Court or CP III and IV from certain angles because they are in the "outskirts" or periphery of the "skyline"... I want a peak, an interesting roofline, a dome, a spire, SOMETHING to change our skyline and become a recognizable building/tower in Ottawa...

No need to worry, I intend to make that happen. Maybe I'll be accepted into the architecture programs and start doing some good stuff for Ottawa, and maybe run for mayor/ city councillor in the next 10 years or so. But seriously, we just need to stay optimistic - it may happen one day. It'll just take a bit of time. I think this building will still make an impact immediately around it, especially if someone convinces BMO to change their public square out front into a proper one.



Just look at this aerial image and you can see the potential the space has.



The parking garage could be replaced with another building (I vote for two slimmer residential towers), and then with the completed Slater it would be perfect for a proper square. We could get some decent stores or something around the area and that may contribute a bit?

I, too, would also like to have seen this building go taller and shed the level top. You could go 40 storeys in this location and barely have the skyline view change when seen from the west, north.

That said, it's good that something is filling in this downtown gap - and covering up a plain, beige/grey wall.

I'm very happy about that. Sometimes the fillers can have a more positive impact to the urban fabric than some bigger projects.

Does anyone know why the Telus building is only 8 floors? I understand that it was (was it?) built specifically for Telus, but it is still a huge waste of space.

That proposal and plaza are nice! We don't have many plaza's or public squares in Ottawa and this one would be nice, especially during the summer where a lot of people could stop and sit at one of the benches and relax. This would get filled with people during lunch hours... Is that a ball fountain in the middle?

Only thing is the office proposal is the SAME height as the BMO next door and kinda the same look, would love to see something different AND maybe 4, 5 or 7 floors higher to make it at least a BIT different than the BMO next door... If the proposal is dead because of low demand for office space, why not propose a residential tower there? If The Slater can do it just across the street, why wouldn't this one work?

If the proposal is built as is, I wouldn't mind. That said, the plaza could be improved. Definitely needs a cool water feature/fountain. To me, the ball just seems like a solid statue of sorts, not a fountain.

Two 30 storey residential towers would be nice. the alley way would be a great place for a restaurant terrace. They could also build a market like courtyard between the old buildings on Bank (note that I think those buildings should have a full historic designation so no façadism à la Ogilvy).
