I was hoping for it to be destroyed and replaced by something taller. I'm a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵, the glass is half empty.

Je ne vois pas grand qualités architecturales à cette tour. Une telle rénovation va être un investissement majeur et pourrait retarder un projet similaire à celui du Point Zéro pour plusieurs décénies. :/

Downtown Holiday Inn to become student residences

By Allison Lampert, Gazette Real Estate Reporter January 22, 2014 6:00 PM

MONTREAL — Quebec’s largest Holiday Inn will close in April — shedding 60 jobs — after the downtown hotel was acquired by a joint venture eager to expand its stake in Montreal’s growing student housing market.

Quebec’s Rosdev Group sold the 488-room hotel for $65 million this month to UK’s Beaumont Partners SA, and U.S.-based Campus Crest Communities, Inc. — the same joint venture that is now converting the former Delta Centre-Ville hotel into a student residence slated to open this fall, a company press release said Wednesday.

“With its proximity to McGill University, we once again believe we have acquired an asset in an irreplaceable location at a discount to replacement cost,” said Ted Rollins, Chief Executive of Campus Crest, which has a 35 per cent stake in the new housing project.

“Our teams look forward to opening both Montreal assets for the 2014 — 2015 academic year.”

The Holiday Inn Midtown on Sherbrooke St. W., is the city’s third hotel to be converted into housing aimed at Montreal’s estimated 200,000 post-secondary students, as U.S. and Canadian real estate investors continue scouting locations to tap into what they call an underserviced market.

I'm resigned to the idea that this trend will continue as the international student population keeps expanding and the hotel structures keep aging beyond the viable cost of renovation. The question is, will an equal number of new hotel rooms structures rise to replace the old?

At least in the case of the Holiday Inn, this was pretty much unavoidable. The chain is already unpopular with business travellers, and the downtown location prevents it from ever being a budget hotel for tourists. Wealthier visitors obviously prefer higher class / more unique establishments. With the Garden Inn and Courtyard opening in recent years/months, we were bound to lose this one.

These are some terrific pictures. The Sheraton's views are pretty rad too.

We can see that empty lot on Montagne is ripe for some serious development. Let's hope it won't be anything like what we've seen on Bishop and Mackay.

Maybe, after the current boom, all the parking lots in the last picture will disappear.

That is really ugly and way too short.... That doesn't belong so close to downtown. I understand it's low-income housing, but still...

Port president ridicules facilities for cruise ships, welcomes Canada-EU trade deal

By François Shalom, THE GAZETTE
February 5, 2014

MONTREAL — The recent Canada-European Union free-trade deal is “made to measure” for the Port of Montreal, its president said Wednesday.

Sylvie Vachon told reporters after a luncheon speech to the Conseil des relations internationales de Montréal (CORIM) that “the North European market is our main market (notably England, France, Belgium, Germany and Holland). So it’s kind of made to measure for us because we are the port of entry for all commercial trade with Europe.”

“I sense a lot of interest from the business community. I spoke with someone from the Canadian Association of Importers and Exporters and they see a lot of advantages.”

She also said that in its continuing quest to attract more cruise ships — and extract more dollars from their affluent passengers — the Port has set up a committee of nine partners, including Aéroports de Montréal and Tourisme Montréal, “which stand to benefit from the economic spinoffs.”

But she was blunt about Montreal’s cruise ship facilities, calling them “ancient.”

“The installations in Old Montreal, on the Alexandra jetty, are quite centenary — there’s no other way of putting it. It’s a polite word, but you get my drift.”

“The installations are not only ancient, they look like it, too.”

“The (passenger) terminal is in a hangar that used to handle grain and was reopened officially for Expo 67. And if you have a chance to visit it, you’ll find yourself transported back to 1967. It’s identical — the same furniture.”

She quipped that with the 1960s retro look coming back in vogue, “that furniture has appreciated in value.”

“So we’re looking at how we can improve these facilities, and also how we can finance all of that. Because the cruise ship market in Montreal has grown quite a lot in the last few years — by about 40 per cent.”
