Hey guys I just found very interesting proposal for Atlanta about bike-sharing program, which I had no idea before. City plans by 2016 to have a vast network of bicycle facilities available, with 570 bicycles at 57 stations throughout the metropolitan area. And I found some info that they are taking this seriously and going to start building this system this year.
I'm European and I'm very happy to hear that. Bike-sharing is very popular in all major European cities and I love this idea. Atlanta is growing and becoming more denser every year and I positive it's going to be success.

Ant131531 thanks your updates.

I had no idea Smyrna was any of those things
Well it's an older burb with typical older, ugly arteries like South Cobb Dr and well Cobb pkwy really as well.

That started decades ago and it can't change over night, but incrementally it's changing and if not for the great recession, the city would have had two large projects done that would be a big deal, but stalled out for financial reasons.

Hopefully the Braves moves that was forced onto the city won't f it all up.

131 Ponce

Can someone elaborate on what is going on at 131 Ponce along its main frontage on Ponce? It was formerly the Gulf Oil Building - but I can't tell if the steel and concrete shell is from the former building, or if it was just torn down. From the original proposal ages ago, I thought they had intended to preserve the building. Looks like that isn't the case in any real way....

From what I recall, they were going to turn that building into the clubhouse/leasing center with a pool on the roof. I believe it was determined that the only thing worth saving from the original building was the facade, so they supposedly removed that part of the building and will reclad the new structure with the material that they salvaged. It's been a while since I heard any news about this so I'm not sure if that's still the plan or not.

I think this is correct. But they're also re-building the structure in a style that alludes to Pei's clean, rectilinear lines and its overall scale/proportions. I was really upset when I read about the demo, but I think the spirit of that building is being well respected/preserved. I'm excited to see how it turns out.

The city of Atlanta is issuing $60 million in bonds to finance this building, so I assume its going forward.

Light Rail?

Do you think that there is a chance for commuter/highspeed rail between Birmingham and Atlanta?

For those of you who aren't APA (American Planning Association) members, this month's Planning magazine is devoted entirely to Atlanta, which is hosting the national APA convention this year.

It's basically a puff piece, but an interesting read (especially about the Beltline).

I'm not in the know but I can't imagine that's on the horizon.
