Rideau Centre Expansion | Completed

A big chunk of St. Laurent's GLA is used up by Herzing College, Rainbow Cinemas, Caseware, Everest College and Goodlife and possibly the Sears warehouse in the basement as well. Listed at 971,000 sq. ft. GLA but probably closer to 700,000 of actual retail.

Was at the Rideau Centre today and you can start to see some of the bigger changes happening both inside and outside, especially on the Mackenzie King Bridge side. The canopy that at one point covered the transit station (heading west on the north side of Mackenzie) is now gone and they have begun punching huge holes in the precast facade presumably where windows will go. It is pretty amazing what a single opening does to that lifeless facade. It will be interesting to see how that facade is transformed. Hopefully it gives that stretch of Mackenzie King a bit of life.

Tower crane is up now at the Rideau Centre. There is a lot of activity on site (inside/outside). I will try to take a few pictures if I'm around there this week.

That's interesting that the list has a heavy Canadian represtation. I wonder if its a sign of the struggling (but slowly rebounding) US economy and Americans aren't shopping as much as before, or if the alternatives to shopping malls (outlet malls, online shopping, specialty stores, etc...) are attracting more shoppers?

I suspect it might have something to do with the levels of retail saturation in the US vs. Canada -- The Rideau Centre is on that list partly because the Ottawa market is underserviced and so it does very well.

Yes and also the comparative lack of downtown malls in the US. Fifth Avenue, Magnificent Mile, 3rd street Promenade etc. also probably have high returns per Sq Ft but they are not technically malls. Some of this could be weather related though not in the case of NY or Chicago.

I guess the square footage of Destiny USA in Syracuse works against it when it comes to the ratio in this list. Certainly that mall draws 'shopping tourists' from across the state, plus Ottawa, Kingston.

Does your twitter mention anything about new cinemas at the Rideau Centre expansion. I know that they are digging away like crazy on Nicholas and Besserer street. I cannot even enter in Besserer street anymore because of construction.

Rideau Street eastbound down to one lane outside Rideau Centre starting Monday

OTTAWA — Rideau Street eastbound traffic between Sussex Drive and William Street will be reduced to one lane starting on Monday.

The city says the right-hand transit and taxi-only lane is being closed for several years to accommodate the Rideau Centre expansion. All transit services will remain in place.

“Commuters should expect delays in the area and are advised to plan their travels accordingly,” the city said in a release. “The public is asked to consider options such as transit, walking, cycling or carpooling.”

Cadillac Fairview Corp., which owns the Rideau Centre, announced a $360-million redevelopment of the mall last September. The revitalization will add 230,000 square feet of leasable area to the shopping centre and includes a glassy makeover of its Rideau Street façade.

The new entrance will include an angled overhead canopy at the mall’s northwest entrance, which will provide access to the city’s new light-rail system when it opens in several years.
