Yeah they really are. They're adding a massive new terminal and a runway, I believe these are collectively known as the "International Facilities Project" as the new terminal will be our international terminal. Under the new runway they are also building a tunnel for every-day civilian vehicular traffic, part of a road called Airport Trail. They also just finished construction on the tallest stand-alone air traffic control tower in Canada.

... and on top of all that, British Airways just announced 787 Dreamliner service between YYC and Heathrow! Awesome.

Small quibble. The airport is not doubling in size, the terminal is.

Another terminal that is more than doubling in size. YFB In Iqaluit.

I am trying to get the latest version of the teminal rederings but gone is the bright yellow of the old terminal and the new terminal is a bright Red.

This project is still in the design stage so look at shovels in the ground by June if the Ship gets in early.

I'm sure the new terminal will be a huge improvement functionally, but the awesome circa 1978 yellow boldness of the old one looks better... it looks like the Butterdome's long-lost cousin.

I like the Yellow as well but the facility is so under sized and in need of considerable repair. During the time expeditions come through on their way up to Resolute to make a run for the Pole the place is so jammed that you have to stand outdoors. The use of busses to take people to the various aircraft is not common. I remember taking a bus to another part of the field because there was no room for the plane. What you don't see in the photo is the dark blue addition from a few years ago.

I wish the planned expansions of facilities and services here had gone ahead. Cascade, Big Sky, Air Canada, PWA and Westjet all had plans at one time or another to come here but it never happened. We would have been connected to Winnipeg/Regina/Vancouver Victoria E-W and have had service to numerous US centres, including Anaheim, Reno and Las Vegas and a resort in Mexico whose name I don't recall. A Terminal more than doubled in size as well IIRC. All we have now is limited service to Calgary, Edmonton and Fort Mac. Though the airport is now a port of entry, it's operated by the county (the city wasn't interested when Transport Canada shed it) there is no international service and there's no money to promote it.

Market forces I know but it's saddening when I think of what might have been.

Edmonton International Airport sees record passenger numbers in 2013

BY EDMONTON JOURNAL, EDMONTON JOURNAL JANUARY 14, 2014

The Edmonton International Airport says 2013 was its busiest year on record for passengers served.

The airport handled a total of 6,983,229 passengers last year, up 4.6 per cent from 2012.

It saw its biggest growth in U.S. transborder travel, which increased to 1.3 million passengers, up 7.7 per cent over the previous year. Domestic passengers increased to 5.3 million, up four per cent, while international flyer numbers went up 3.4 per cent to 406,207.

“These record-breaking numbers show that Edmonton International Airport completed its expansion just in time,” said Traci Bednard, the airport’s vice-president of passenger market development.

The airport largely completed a $670-million terminal expansion over the past two years, adding a revamped Canada arrivals hall, an improved U.S. departures area, a new control tower and more shopping and restaurant amenities. A Marriott Renaissance hotel is expected to open in 2014.

The airport’s private terminals also saw a jump in business, with corporate charter flights increasing 30 per cent in 2013, to nearly 26,000 landings.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but I believe at the bottom of the chart here, it shows an adjusted number of 14 222 708 for passengers at YYC. If that's the case, it looks like we surpassed Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport as the 3rd busiest, seeing as they only reached the 14 million mark on December 30th, which would put them at 14 050 000 at best.

Congrats!

As a Montrealer there is not too much to be sad about, it was a record year for YUL at 14 million passengers, and there are plenty of interesting new flights coming this year.

Exactly. I wonder why, at this point in history, so many new things are coming to so many Canadian airports? Even airports in cities like Prince George BC (Metro 90 000) have had their airports completely rebuilt and new routes added. What has changed over the last decade to warrant such a paradigm shift?

YMX is mirabel I take it? I often wonder if Pickering will become Mirabel 2.0.. It seems like Pearson still has plenty of space to grow before running into issues. They can essentially still double the size of T1..
