I was having dinner with some friends on the weekend and they were going on about the Carleton parking garage scandal. And they aren't at all the type to fall for that type of thing. They were quite surprised to hear that there wasn't any truth to any of it.

One thing that I have learned from this exercise is that outrage based on misinformation can be a powerful force. And to think that it is FOL complaining about OSEG's spin doctors. No pro is a match for grassroots spin.

Loving some of those renders, especially the one with the outdoor concert (with the condo tower behind it). Reminds me of my teen years in the 90s, when I attended EDGEFEST there. I am hoping to see outdoor shows there once again in the future. I mean, Lebreton Flats/War Museum is a great venue for Bluesfest, but this will be a great alternative downtown outdoor venue too.
Maybe they could get ESCAPADE festival there during the Canada Day long weekend? Electronic music for 3 days, outdoors at TD Place, noon to 11pm, right downtown, some of the best DJs in the world. Even Alecz_Dad wouldn't be able to stop his teen kids from attending

Those were the days. I'm also surprised that Rideau Carleton Raceway was never used more for festivals since Edgefest '99 was great there.

City update!

Urban Village:

•The contractors are working inside several of the buildings, installing drywall and other interior finishes.
•On the outside of the buildings, waterproofing and the steel studs for the exterior cladding are being installed.

Park:

•Work continues in the urban park though the extreme cold and large snowfall has been a challenge.
•Aberdeen Square on the north side of the Aberdeen Pavilion is progressing. The contractor has started to form and pour the first concrete curbs along the perimeter of the square. They are also installing underground wiring as well as special cells to encourage healthy tree root growth in the square.
•A large portion of the pavers in the court on the east side of the Aberdeen Pavilion have been laid.
•The berm is being shaped and foundations for the art screen that will run along the top are being excavated.

•At the north stands, the contractor is pouring the concrete foundations for the new field-level seating.
•Work continues to install the new roof over the arena.
•At the south stands, brackets that will support the horizontal beams of the wooden structure that wraps around the stands, called ‘the Veil’, are now being installed.
•Tiling in the washrooms in the future locker rooms in the basement level has started.
•Building the suites and finishing concessions on the upper levels continues.
•Exterior cladding is being installed on the media box at the top level of the stands.

This is going back a ways, but I think they plan on running images like waves and birds in flight and such on it. Not entirely sure.

Over at Lansdowne Park, there are more than 900 workers on site so when extreme cold or a snowstorm hits, the game plan for the day can quickly change.

The design for a new city-owned parking garage proposed for the Glebe received approval from the planning committee Tuesday.

Council previously directed staff to establish a parking facility at 170 Second Ave. at a cost of $9.5 million. The garage is expected to take stress off parking demand at Lansdowne Park when the entertainment and shopping complex opens later this year.

The four-storey, 1,750-sq.-m. structure will have 149 spaces for vehicles and 35 spaces for bikes.

Capital Coun. David Chernusehnko acknowledged the irony in his support for the garage, since he's a proponent of sustainable transportation.

Chernushenko said he would have preferred to call it a "mobility hub" but he sees it for what it really is: A parking garage.

"There was no perfect solution, no perfect design," he said.

Chernushenko said the garage will also benefit businesses on Bank St. and workers in the area.
