October 30, 2013

MONCTON – Venue pack ticket information for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 was unveiled yesterday and packs will begin to go on sale on November 28, 2013.

“We are very excited for another opportunity to showcase Moncton on the world stage in 2014,” said Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc. “This is an exciting announcement as it brings us that much closer to the event and hosting world class soccer here in Moncton.”

As an Official Host City, Moncton will play host for eight matches during the competition at Moncton Stadium, including quarter and semi-final matches. Venue pack ticket purchasers acquire the right to attend all eight matches. Only venue packs go on sale beginning November 28, 2013. Moncton consumer confidence rises: survey
Tuesday, November 26, 2013
Times & Transcript
By: Cole Hobson

A survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates (CRA) Inc. suggests Moncton's consumer confidence is rising.

According to the CRA's most recent Urban Report Survey, consumer confidence in Moncton rests at 104.5, which is the highest of the four Maritime cities tracked on a quarterly basis. Fredericton sits lowest at 98.3, while confidence in Halifax stands at 102.0 and Saint John is 99.4.

Don Mills, CEO and chairman of CRA, said anything above a 100 in their view is a positive.

'It means that consumers are not worried about what's going on in the economy so much and are prepared basically to continue to spend as they normally spend,' he said. 'Moncton has actually been a very positive urban area for quite a long time and I think it reflects the fact Moncton (has grown) as a city over the last 15, 20 years.

'It's probably the most private sector oriented of the three cities in New Brunswick at the moment and it's got a number of good head office that I think are important to the city like Atlantic Lotto and Blue Cross, for instance.' Consumer confidence in the region has shifted since last quarter for some municipalities. Residents in Moncton and Saint John saw an increased shift in confidence, up approximately six points each from last quarter. Confidence in both Halifax and Fredericton is down slightly from last quarter, down 0.6 and 1.4 points respectively.

Moncton's results are seen as positive for those in the community.

'Certainly we' re finding that there's more people that are establishing downtown. We have a few new businesses, I think we counted the other day there are probably between eight and 10 new businesses just on St. George Street. That's good news,' said Anne Poirier Basque, executive director of Downtown Moncton Centre-ville Inc., said the region is also enjoying plenty of business from outside the city and province as well.

'You wouldn't think that there's any kind of decline in consumer confidence, that's for sure.' Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc said the Maritimes have been going through a period of slowdown of late, so it's good to hear that consumer confidence is rising.

'It does jive with what I've been hearing,' he said.

'That's why I feel that this is good news going forward that I think signals an upswing in people's feelings about the economy and our prospects for the future.' These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent survey of Halifax Regional Municipality, Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton residents. The results are based on an adult sample of 404 Halifax Regional Municipality, 401 Saint John, 400 Moncton, and 401 Fredericton residents, conducted from Oct. 22 to Nov. 5, 2013, with results accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.

Building projects on Moncton agenda
Monday, December 16, 2013
Times & Transcript

Moncton city council have a packed agenda as they hold their last regular public meeting of 2013 this evening.

Among the many items will be an update from the city manager on the project schedule for the proposed downtown centre.

As well, council is expected to issue a request for proposals for landscape architectural design and engineering services for the restoration of Downing Street.

Also, they are expected to make a change to a request for proposals relating to design and construction of a new fire hall to replace the McLaughlin Road station.

A request for proposals will also be issued for a feasibility study on the proposed North-End Centre and the repurposing of the Moncton Coliseum Complex.

A request for qualifications will be issued as part of the competition for creation of public art at Resurgo Place, as the expanded Moncton Museum will be called when it and the Transportation Discovery Centre open under one roof in the new year.

They will also decide on disposition of a portion of city-owned land on Fraser Ave to the YWCA of Moncton for $1.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the council chamber at Moncton city hall.

Moncton council projects progressing
Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Moncton city council approved next steps for a number of municipal projects at their regular public meeting last night.

Council unanimously accepted a project schedule for a proposed downtown centre that shifts around the order of steps a bit but does not alter the overall plan to issue the request for proposals by March 2014 and to select a successful proponent by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015.

The city has hired the firm Deloitte as a professional consultant on the project, and acting largely on the consultants' advice, city staff are now getting a lot more details and legal issues worked out ahead of issuing the RFP rather than after the fact.

'One of the challenges in life is not knowing what you don't know,' city manager Jacques Dubé said wryly, explaining how since the City of Moncton has never overseen such a project before, it's not surprising that the expert consultants have pointed out better ways to manage the process.

A plan to reinstitute Downing Street, which currently turns into the parking lot of the Atlantic Blue Cross Centre, as a street connecting Main Street and Assomption Bouelvard also took a next step last night. Genivar has been hired as the landscape architect to link city hall and the riverfront with a through street that is also attractive to pedestrians and those using other modes of transportation. The contract, worth roughly $168,000, is part of a legacy project the city is doing with federal help in honour of Moncton's 125th anniversary in 2015.

Meanwhile, CEI Architecture secured the roughly $130,000 contract to perform a two-fold feasibility study that looks at a proposed north end community centre as well as the future of the Moncton Coliseum Complex. It has been suggested the Coliseum could provide some community amenities that would otherwise go to a north end centre, should the downtown centre be built.

Lastly, council approved the mandated public art for Resurgo Place, scheduled to open in 2014.

The large-scale granite sculpture, submitted by artist André Lapointe, is titled Le Mascaret (The Tidal Bore) and emphasizes the tidal bore as one of Moncton's greatest natural treasures. The sculpture is scheduled to be installed on the grounds of Resurgo Place in August 2014.

The granite chosen for the art piece will be of brown hues to reflect the Petitcodiac River and also complements the construction materials used at Resurgo Place.

Lapointe has been a professor of fine arts at Université de Moncton since 1988. His submission was selected by the Public Art Advisory Committee after a Request for Qualifications was issued this past August. The $60,000 public art piece was budgeted in the Resurgo Place construction and was calculated in accordance with the City of Moncton's Percent for Public Art Policy, which ensures that funds are made available for public art to support the flourishing of the arts in our community and to provide for interesting and aesthetically pleasing municipal public spaces.

Resurgo Place is the new home of the Moncton Museum, the Transportation Discovery Centre and the Visitor Information Centre. The facility will feature new exhibition galleries, an education centre, gift shop, café, and an interior public plaza designed to preserve the 1916 sandstone façade of the former Moncton City Hall.

Colour (or in this case "black & white") for the page.

A couple of historical aerial perspectives of the downtown, courtesy of the "Vintage Moncton" website:

Although I am not sure, I would guess these pictures are from the late 1930's or the 1940's

Haven't seen this posted yet.

Looks like the Tidal Bore surfing is getting some extra attention south of the border.

The commentary is actually pretty funny!

I just wish that article showed one shot of the city. I think the bore tourism is great, but I can't help but think that it'll put off a lot of potential tourists if everyone thinks Moncton is some sort of taiga wilderness 6 days by canoe north of Boston.

LOL, I can't decide if they are the worst ambassadors for surf Moncton or the best... stereotypes spouting stereotypes. It's like a mobius strip.

I DO have a hunch this thing will really take off... interesting to see what summer brings.

If anyone is interested, this is the link to the video about the Petitcodiac tidal bore surfers that aired on ABC Nightline

http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/surfing-hotspot-muddy-canadian-river-21457618

If you ignore the "aboot" jokes, the references to moose and Mounties and the crack about the "land of endless winter", it actually isn't too bad…….

My hope is that it will get the government to replace the causeway with a bridge.

Four Points by Sheraton is coming to Moncton!

Just saw on the Starwood Hotels website that Four Points is coming to Moncton in January 2015. No other details available.
A Starwood property in Moncton is a great addition!

I wonder where?

A Four Points could either be located downtown or in the suburbs. Ideally, a downtown location would be better (similar in many ways to the downtown Marriott property).

Excellent news for the city!! If they plan on opening in January 2015, they had better start breaking ground PDQ. I wonder however if it won't end up being like the other Marriott property (Fairfield Inn) on Harrisville Blvd which ended up being about a year late in opening.......

I have a feeling it will be located out near the casino, but with the amount of hotels already out there downtown is a possibility or near mapleton.

On many occasions, Four Points are re-branded properties, like the recent Four Points Edmundston. After doing a quick roundup of our hotel properties in Moncton, I could see these as potential candidates in no particular order; Crowne Plaza, Ramada Crystal Palace, Casino Hotel, Holiday Inn Express Moncton.

I just checked Starwood's property locations on their mobile site. It says Moncton is at 40 Lady Ada Blvd. That is currently the Future Inn. Looks like they will be rebranding that property.
