Oh I understand it just fine. In fact I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge that many Asian buyers don't like the number 4 because it sounds like the word for death in their languages. Anybody who's been following the condo market in Toronto for the last decade probably knows that because it's far from an uncommon practice to skip floors 4, 13, etc.

It's still dumb.

It's part of my family's culture to hang a pendant in your house to ward off the "evil eye".

Totally agree. If you don't like the number 4, 13 etc don't buy on those floors. In some Asian cultures the number 8 is considered lucky. Perhaps the condos should just number every single floor as 8. It's about as logical as skipping 13.

Reading the article in the above link it's not clear whether they mean "supertall" in the same sense as it is commonly used on here, ie 300m or taller. I interpret the blog's use of "super tall" to mean a very tall tower. They even state that "The actual height of a super tall tower doesn't really matter."

I'm not wanting to put a downer on the excitement, just keeping a level head.
I for one would love a tower to break that magic figure of 300m here in Toronto, and I love the designs of that proposed at One Yonge.

I don't think I've ever heard the word supertall used objectively outside of this forum. At first glance the tallest in the new picture doesn't seem to be 10+ m taller than the old one.

EDIT: Yeah, withdrawing my statements after reading that article, not clear if he means a 300m+ tower, just confirms 88 floors and he's throwing the "supertall" monicker quite casually.

Why? They may be out there but, I haven't seen a single buildings with 4s but no 13 that was built in the last 25 years in Toronto.

Too many towers crammed on a common podium. Yeah, doesn't do it for me. My ideal would be one or fewer towers, separate bases and one topping 300+ metres. Oh maybe not. The height just look ridiculous compared to Pinnacle Centre and 18 Yonge.

We've been pondernig here, if the city might give Pinnacle some leeway if they propose few towers, on a smaller floorpate, and set back further from the street to allow more sunlight into the new waterfront area. If that is the case, one or two of the towers might end up being supertalls, if they take it down a notch from 6 towers to 4 towers.

Right now, I believe they have one tower at 293 meters, another at 262 meters and 2 more at between 240 meters to 250 meters. So, I could see two "supertalls" over 300 meters in exchange for fewer towers and smaller floorplates set back further from the street.

This actually got me thinking... I'm going to be making quite a few more trips up to the observation deck on the Calgary Tower over the next three or four years, with all the new construction in view. Might make a good excuse for a dinner engagement at Sky 360.

What you do is make a reservation ahead of time and go at lunch. The fee to go up the tower gets waived and, if you consider the views and access to the observation deck, the $16 burger isn't that bad.

Would be nice, but I don't think these will do it. The tallest in the new renderings does not look 300m+. Besides, we already have tentative heights in the 290s for the tallest of 1-7 Yonge.

Once more I am in agreement with you Gresto. Whilst I would love to see the 300m mark broken, it is unlikely to be at the One Yonge project. If anything, I still think the Oxford twins are our best bet.
