yep. i don't care about who builds it. if vancouver architects don't cut it, then they don't cut it. i don't want our city to cater to local architects, especially, if they can't design and built the best with the budget we've got.

our local architects have a lot to learn from some of the best in the world.

I think it would boil down to who has designed art galleries and museums - and local firms probably haven't done many.

I guess Bing Thom's projects are more on the theatre and performance side of the arts, rather than the museum and art gallery side.

Yeah, there's no mistake when looking at their portfolios that they wanted someone with art gallery experience.

I would think that all if not most of the Worlds acclaimed Art Galleries have been designed my people "without" prior Art Gallery experience.

Any architectural firm worth its salt, can design anything from a twisty skyscraper, mall, bank, or even a waterfront convention centre. There are no hidden secrets to gallery design.

Very much doubt thats true.

Like in any field, looking in from the outside it all seems so simple, so obvious. But there are definitely architectural firms with expertise and technical skillsets on designing specific structures, and clients seek them out, for all of the issues that are specific to their industry.

I wouldn't want an architectural firm that's "worth it's salt" in designing beautiful eco-friendly residential complexes doing my Three Gorges dam design work. Equally so, I want the most experienced gallery design firm building my high-profile gallery

Pls no, KPMB, unless we want to spend $350 million on a safe and conventional box.

IMO:
1st pick: Herzog + de Meuron
2nd: SANAA
3rd: Diller Scofidio
4th: Tod Williams

Not much point to this discussion. As someone stated earlier, the project won't get off the ground; the Culture Minister has already made it clear that the province won't be providing any funding for this:

look sliek reality has finally hit this place, the liberals is no god, ....three light rails, 2 skytrain routes, 1 art gallery, 1 performance center and a new stadium...where does the money come from? i'm sure it wasn't from the sky.

first, there were new bsues, new convention centers and hotels all around the metro...and new condos, now we will have an urban resort casino, world class art facilities...an outlet with 200 designer brands? as the vancouver legend and saga continues, as promised by the premier, u r takling about a mini milan, plus a mini vegas. this city really did well in terms of building entertainment. however, despite the premier's optimistic vision, I think in terms of culture and fashion, it's moer than just infrastructure. it's about history and taste too...vancouver doen'st have the maturity for that yet. and that outlet would be nothing more than a shopping center somewhere
outside of the mainstream. but u never know, envirometn does change ppl's mindset, and perhaps one day people will dress up like they were in rome or milan. However, how many people will really care much about fashion? like on a cultural sense, will u ever hear people talk about clothing on a deeper level aruond twon? so the question woudl be, would u even think ppl will talk about art? when homeless people carry a painting with them whereever they go, i think that's when we are ready.

The Mat | Vancouver Art Gallery | Proposed

Here's an interesting unsolicited proposal that would have the new art gallery built in the location of the granville bridge loops once they are removed.

Damn it I thought it was a real proposal! Got me excited.

Actually i think I've seen this before. I think a couple years ago one of the papers showed a couple really cool proposals/ideas for a new art gallery. I think this was one of them. It would be great if they did something like that though.

I know, I was pretty excited when I first saw this too. There's some things I don't like about it like the overuse of concrete, but the concept itself is great and would connect with the proposed granville pedestrian/bike path well.

I really like and it would integrate perfectly with the planned walkway over Granville Bridge. This would be a gateway building to the city, so the architecture should be a bit more daring.

I hope something that would happen for this fairly challenging site to utilize efficiently.

There was also another that had them building one all a long the bottom of the Granville bridge. and another in Stanley park. I guess those were posted in the art gallery topic. I'm guessing this topic is gonna get moved into that one soon enough.

This isn't a proposal and doesn't belong in it's own thread, it's also been previously discussed. Instead of closing closed though I'll merge it with the existing thread.

Interesting news, looks like they've chosen Herzog & de Meuron for the design. They've done some good work, we'll have to wait to see what they come up with.

Here's an interesting question: who will be the local architect of record?

All projects need a local architect, to whom the actual City application process responsibility falls. For the Westbank BIG project it is Dialog that is the local architect of record. For the main branch of the library it was DA Architects acting as the local architects of record for Moshe Safdie. For the MNP tower it was Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership as local architects of record for the Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates-designed building. Etc. The list goes on.
