McCafe is opening in Scotia Square on Dec. 30.

Seems like an odd location, but the food court is filled with office workers at lunch. I doubt it will hurt the Starbucks across the hall.

This makes me happy. We have a strong market for beer, and it's been satiated by corn swill for too long. One more step to a proper beer culture here finally.

Maybe someday, someone will steal the original Keith's recipe, which I've been told was really quite good, a la the Italian Job, minis and all... driven by Micheal Kaine, and Charlize Theron. Sorry Marky Mark you do not give me good vibrations in your movies.

For what it's worth, I think the Maritimes has the second-best beer culture in Canada, behind Southern Ontario (which is increasingly an embarassment of riches for good microbrews). Certainly per capita, the number of craft breweries on the east coast is way ahead of prairies/B.C., and I think the quality is higher too.

827 Bedford Highway is the site on the north-side of the motel (THREAD).

There's also Southgate Village across the street (THREAD)

I think this might have been posted before (maybe a smaller version?), but here's a rendering of the renos and signage changes planned for the building with Starbucks at the corner of Spring Garden and Queen:

Of course, there will be an apartment building in behind rather than an empty lot. I think I also said this before, but one subtle change is the glass addition on the southern part of the building, which looks like it'll cover up the little bit of surface parking at the rear of the lot. If this happens it will be possible to have a solid streetwall from Spring Garden to Morris if the Chickenburger site is redeveloped. In either case it will definitely be dramatically better than a couple of years ago.

Back when this building was first renovated after the Royal Bank moved out (I guess when DHX bought it) there was some talk of adding a third floor onto it. Too bad that never happened.

We can't have that! It'll cover up the stencil of the Chickenburger logo! We must keep the stencil in the name of never letting something like the fly-by-night Chickenburger happen again.

There is a rumour going around that the DND will be abandoning the Armoury on North Park Street after the ones in Bedford and Willow Park are constructed. Apparently they have been doing this in other parts of Canada. The building was built in 1899 and is a National Historic Site.

Which means... it'll end up being a closed up federal building? Or would they sell it off?!

But then in recent months, the Federal Government have been going on a selling spree, selling off public lands nationally and internationally, in an obvious rushed bid to balance the federal budget by 2015:

So, perhaps they would sell it. Not sure what that would mean for the property or what it could be used for.

I'm sure if put on the selling block, a organization called "Friends of the Armoury" will form, and call for height limits around it to "Save the View" from each of its turrets.

This could be a good thing if it is redeveloped properly, particularly now that the North End is becoming much more desirable. It's not really in good shape right now, and it is a national historic site.

what would be a possible re-use?

I could see Dalhousie could probably use the space. Or the province could renovate it inside, and move the Courthouses here from Spring Garden, which I understand are pretty cramped:

If we wanted to be more ambitious, here are a few other ideas.

In NYC, they're turning the Kingsbridge Armoury in the Bronx into the world's largest public indoor skating rink:

While the OVAL is already nearby, it's still an interesting proposal for some kind of public use or asset. Perhaps we should forget about Shannon Park build a new stadium here instead?

THIS is a much more suitable location for the farmers' market. Not that I expect the Seaport Market to pull up its anchor and move now that it has invested in its current location.

Would make a great location for many things.

Farmer's market is the first thing to come to mind with me as well. Way more pedestrian accessible. As for the seaport market, I think if you start something at the armory and it's successful then you can just let mother nature take her course.
