Global Travel Industry - 1 million votes cast - Deer Valley #1 in the U.S.A. Deer Valley Places #1 in three of four categories

Deer Valley Resort, Goldener Hirsch and Casa Nova honored by travel industry - Ski industry professionals pick the best in each of 20 countries

Travel industry professionals confirmed what Ski Magazine readers have been saying for years -- that Deer Valley is at the top of its game.
Over the weekend Deer Valley Resort was named the Best Ski Area in the United States, joining 19 others that received best-in-their-country awards.

Deer Valley already is a five-time first-place winner of Ski Magazine's reader survey of ski areas in North America, but according to Deer Valley president Bob Wheaton, this recognition comes from a global audience.

"For us to get first place in the U.S. in that arena is quite something," he said, adding that he was told more than a million votes were cast.

Wheaton went on to credit his staff for the achievement.

The luxury residence Casa Nova, located in Deer Crest was named Best Ski Chalet in the United States. Photo by Douglas Burke "It is clearly due to the great folks that are here on staff, their commitment to our goals that they work toward on a daily basis. It is just rewarding to stand beside them."
The Best Ski Area in the World title was bestowed on Val Thorens in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, France, and The Ritz-Carlton at Bachelor Gulch in Colorado earned bragging rights as the Best Ski Hotel in the World.

This is the first year for the World Ski Awards event, which is a new offshoot of the 20-year old World Travel Awards. The gala ceremony was held over the weekend in Kitzbühel, Austria.

According to a press release from the World Ski Awards organization, the goal of the competition is "to drive up standards within the ski industry by rewarding the organizations that are leaders in their field. Votes were cast by professionals working within the ski industry - senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media -- and by the public."

The finalists in each of four categories, Best Ski Resort, Best Ski Hotel, Best Ski Boutique Hotel and Best Ski Chalet, were notified in October.

Park City was also represented in two other categories.

The Goldener Hirsch Inn was named the best Boutique Hotel in the United States. According to General Manager Kelley Davidson, "We are very proud of this.

Goldener Hirsch General Manager Kelley Davidson said the Inn is honored to be named Best Ski Boutique Hotel in the United States. Photo by Christopher Reeves/Park Record (Christopher Reeves)" He noted that other finalists in the category included the Washington School Inn, also in Park City, and the Rusty Parrot in Jackson, Wyo. and said he was pleased to be included in their company.
Davidson noted that the Goldener Hirsch is one of the only family-owned and -operated boutique hotels in the country. It is owned by the Spencer F. Eccles family, who, he said, visits regularly during the ski season and loves to ski at Deer Valley.

Casa Nova, also located in Park City, was named Best Ski Chalet in the United States. According to the its website, Casa Nova is a 13,000-square-foot luxury home in Deer Crest that can accommodate 25 guests.

According to the chalet's Chief Happiness Officer and Estate Manager Jenni Haines, "Our goal is to know a guest's wants before they do." The chalet, which is part of Virtuoso Hotels and Resorts, was designed by the architect Costantino Grandjacquet and is kicking off its seventh ski season.

I didn't really focus on the design of this structure, but its location on those intersecting streets is amazing. I actually like the placement of this hotel better than the other and think this one has/will have a bigger impact of a future downtown Murray.

I dunno...I kind of miss the Subway and smokes shop that was there before the hotel.

Except I don't. That's a great location--should spur some growth around it. Great site for that project.

Do Layton and Clearfield fall under this thread?
The TOD apartments in Layton have their cladding on now, and banners hanging on the old Oregon Short Line depot officially announce the building will be restored and opened as a welcome center next spring.
As for Clearfield, something may actually be built in that vast, empty space between the station and State Street starting next spring:

Thanks for the update. We generally put anything north of Bountiful in the Ogden Junction Mega thread.

Which always annoys me. We ought to have a Davis County thread because many of those places north of Bountiful are closer to SLC than Ogden.

Anything south of Kaysville is closer to SLC than Ogden.

I think putting it in the Ogden thread is fine. If we had a Davis county thread I just don't think it would be that beneficial, aside from Station Park and a few things now and then there isn't all that much development that goes on. Unless of course we want to discuss suburban housing.

I think Farmington is a real half and half dividing line, if not geographically then culturally. A good half of Farmington works, shops, and goes to higher education in the Ogden area and the other half in the Salt Lake area.

That said, I think Future Mayor is right that there just isn't enough going on (yet) in Davis County to warrant its own thread. That coupled with the fact that the US Census bureau puts Davis County in its entirety in the Ogden-Clearfield MSA.

In any case, even if we decided as a group to put anything south of Kaysville in the SLC thread, his post would still belong in the Ogden thread being that it was about Clearfield and Layton.

IMHO.

Park City -Another building boom

The Park Record
By Jay Hamburger

http://www.parkrecord.com/ci_24818700/vails-arrival-park-citys-mayoral-contest-made-2013

...If it was not the crane looming over the high-traffic intersection of Main Street and Heber Avenue it might have been the hammering away at the frames of new houses in Park City's neighborhoods that signaled the construction industry enjoyed a resurgence in 2013.

The industry, long a bellwether of Park City's economy, did not come close to threatening the record-setting years prior to the recession, but there was enough construction activity inside the city that people noticed the uptick. At the end of November, the year-to-date dollar figure attached to building permits sat at just less than $69 million, nearly $7 million ahead of the 2012 pace.

A string of permits for new houses boosted the numbers. Numerous permits for alterations and additions were issued as well, as property owners continued to upgrade or expand existing properties instead of building new ones.

Some of the upgrades and expansions were notable, both in dollar figure and ambition. The most
noticeable were along Main Street. The private sector invested heavily in work on Main Street buildings this year as construction zones were fenced off up and down the street.

By November and December, leaders on Main Street and at City Hall were expressing concern about the building activity along the street. They worried that the construction zones could disrupt the pedestrian experience and hurt sales.

"We believe the development community has been given a bit too much leeway and the pendulum needs to swing back closer to center," a mid-December City Hall report said.

By the time the holiday crowds arrived in Park City, the construction crews along Main Street took steps to minimize the impact, including the removal of a large crane that loomed over Main Street and the opening of a stretch of sidewalk close to the Main Street-Heber Avenue intersection...

Does anybody know what's going on with the old Utah fun dome building? Last year it was announced that it was going to be demolished.. But for the last month or so it appears as if they have been doing work on the roof..

Does anyone know if they have decided to keep this building? I guess it's possible that there salvaging HVAC equipment in preparation for demolition or something.. I'm just kind of curious on the status of this property!

Was that the 49th Street Galleria at one point? I remember that place. I grew up in St George, but in 8th grade on a band field trip, we spent an evening there. Memories!

I think Ivory Homes owns the property and are planning to build a mix between single family homes, townhouses, and commercial space. I work kiddy corner from the lot and thats what they have told us.

Here is a new building that is going up in the Murray area as part of the Birckhill on main project. and while I'm on that topic, let me just say that the colorful apartment complex west of the Trax station has the worst parking ever...but they are nice inside. But still. work parking ever.

Nice to see the office mix going in there at Birkhill. Have they started with Mom and Pop businesses yet, that cater to the residents?

I wonder if the existing building will be the commercial portion of the development... The property is actually quite big..

unfortunately in the birkhill area there isn't much of any street level shops. The original building in the area has space for some but that hasn't been very successful and haven't done much for street shopping. I also don't think Murray has done much in the way of ordinances to encourage or enforce such street level shops. I think it is sad that they haven't as it could create that TRAX station as a destination more than a place to live.

Orenco Station in Hillsboro, Oregon is a good example to compare Birkill to. The developers developed the zoning ordinances and language for that particular development. It's way out in the suburbia, but it's a good attempt to make a pedestrian friendly/urbanish environment. Maybe the Birkhill developers could look to the Orenco Station developers for help in nudging Murray along.

I think with the recent addition of the two apartment complexes, and the new town homes going up right now, the immediate population will now be enough to be able to support the Birkhill retail.

The original building wasn't even close to enough residential to support more than one maybe two shops. There is one shop in the northern most existing town home on Main, which if I'm not mistaken the shop has been open for several years. The completion of this new commercial building, hopefully soon, should also help with retail demand.

That was my next question, is there enough of a population base to support commercial/retail services now. It would seem like the amazing buildup over the last three four years would put it within the right range.
