I'm sure you're right, but it seems to me that they are making a mistake. Now every major city in North America has several facilities with generic corporate names, many of which change every couple of years, and almost none of the names are distinctive at all, particularly outside of that city. By keeping the meaningful place name, a sponsor could actually distinguish themselves from the crowd. And I'm sure they could still manage to compel broadcasters and media to use the full name, so they'd get some value.

@cflsciarra: TD very respectful of Lansdowne history. Naming rights is for Stadium/Arena and will be TD Place at Lansdowne Park. #communityfocus

I think it's hard to say this doesn't suck for people on Holmwood: https://twitter.com/alecz_dad/status/407343901238771712/photo/1

How about we wait until the townhouses are finished before passing judgement?

Remember that those buildings are on the site occupied by the dilapidated rear of the Horticulture Building and a parking lot. It wasn't exactly the idyllic forest scene that alecz_dad likes to paint.

When they built the replacement for Mile High Stadium in Denver, it was supposed to be called Invesco Field only, and the population and the local media bucked at the idea and even the official media like the daily newspaper continued to refer to the stadium as Mile High Stadium for quite some time.

Eventually Invesco relented and agreed to use Invesco Field at Mile High as the official name.

Of course, predictably the name was changed just a few years later and the stadium is now something like Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Seems like only the name Mile High has true staying power. As it should. And as Lansdowne should.

Google Streetview would say otherwise... The "dilapidated horticulture building" actually looked kinda cool from the back and the parking lot was more or less hidden away by the trees out front. https://maps.google.ca/?ll=45.400559,-75...Pr16q14vi0rBurtpK0iA&cbp=12,222,,0,-0.84

Sure the townhouses will be good for the maybe 4-8 houses situated in front of them, but it appears the rest of the street is S.O.L.

It looked like it had the potential to look cool, but the boarded up windows really ruin the effect for me. Makes the building look more foreboding than friendly. The dead-looking ivy on the wall is a downer for me too, but I suppose if the car had gone by on a day when it was green and leafy I might think differently.

TD Place at Lansdowne Park suits me fine, as TouchDown Place at Lansdowne Park is such a good fit.

I wonder how much money they can get for the naming rights to the urban park?

How will they handle it?

I mean, Telus Park at Lansdowne Park sounds kind of redundant . People will say that there is too much Parking there.

It is part of progress sadly that names of sports venues are farmed out to the highest bidder. The end result is that names are always changing when you look at them collectively. It has gotten to the point that I really couldn't tell you where some of the NHL arenas are located based on the corporate names being used at the present time. So, the venues are losing some of their geographical identity. Thankfully, it hasn't gotten to the point that team names are being sold to the highest bidder or else team identity will be lost. But could this happen in the future? I hope not. Anybody cheering for the Walmart Price Cutters tonight? Oh, and what city are they based?. Shhh! Our sponsorship agreement forbids the public use of the City name.

But you could use Telus Square at Lansdowne Park. Love the new electronic boards in Telus Square blasting Telus commercials at us constantly.

Construction update:

-The Vibe tower has topped out, including mechanical.
-The Rideau Tower is above ground now, with the townhouses taking shape along the street.
-The office building immediately in front of the stadium facing Bank Street is built to 4 storeys

I like the compromise. The only problem I foresee is distinguishing the arena from the stadium for events and whatnot, since it's my understanding that they are both TD Place now. Perhaps they could have the TD Arena and TD Stadium and collectively they are TD Place at Lansdowne Park... or is that too confusing?

Not confusing at all. They would just state that an event is being held at TD Place Arena.

No different than going to Keith Harris Stadium at Carleton U. or Minto Field at the Nepean Sportsplex.

What’s in a name? Big money and great PR

Frank Clair Stadium’s rebranding the latest example of the premium companies place on name recognition

By Vito Pilieci, OTTAWA CITIZEN January 7, 2014 7:01 PM

OTTAWA — Despite some public frustration, an agreement to change the name of the iconic Frank Clair Stadium to TD Place is a sign of the times that Ottawa residents will soon accept, says a local branding expert.

Gordon McMillan, president and chief creative officer of Ottawa marketing agency McMillan, said major companies are salivating to associate their brands with stadiums, parks, theatres and other venues because of the positive feelings associated with them.

“Anytime there is an event in the venue, it’s advertising. You’re associating your brand with a feel-good event in the community,” said McMillan, a day after the Citizen reported on a deal that will see the stadium at Landsdowne Park stripped of the Frank Clair name and rebranded as TD Place.

McMillan said the “seven-figure deal” — the exact amount of the sponsorship has not been released — is a drop in the bucket for a large organization such as TD.

“TD could spend that on marketing quickly. Building awareness of the brand is super important. It’s easy to understand why companies want to brand these stadiums.”

TD Bank has already bought the naming rights to the home of the Boston Bruins, which is now known as the TD Garden. Meanwhile, it’s believed that Bell Canada is paying as much as $10 million each year for the right to name the Montreal Canadiens’ home arena. In 2009 American bank Citigroup signed a 20-year deal worth $400 million US for the naming rights to Citi Field, which is home to the New York Mets.

Here in Ottawa, the Ottawa Senators recently overturned a long-term deal with sponsor Scotiabank to sign a deal with Canadian Tire over the naming rights for the team’s arena.

The latest announcement, though, had some Ottawa residents seeing red.

In letters sent to the Citizen on Tuesday, many wrote that renaming the stadium, which was named after former Ottawa Rough Riders coach Clair — the 3rd most successful coach in Canadian Football League history with 147 wins — was in bad taste.

“A historically important part of Ottawa’s past has been swept away by the current, hastily sketched out scheme,” said Centretown resident Bill Brown.

His thoughts were supported by Glebe resident Ken Rubin.

“A name change sold to the highest bidder and just so fitting for the retrograde Lansdowne Park full disservice shopping centre,” he said.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the naming rights to the facilities in Lansdowne Park have been sold to the highest bidder. The old Civic Centre was the prize in a corporate raffle, tickets cost $1,000 each. Urbandale won that draw in 2009 and the arena was named the Urbandale Centre for a year. In subsequent years, the arena was named the Rona Centre and the J. Benson Cartage Centre.

According to experts, it’s not hard to see why the big brands are eager to get their names on the sides of public attractions such as arenas, concert halls and stadiums. Aside from the advertising it hands them every time there is an event held at the venue, the traffic flowing by the building every day is exposed to the sponsor’s brand.

Barry Nabatian, director of market research for Ottawa’s Shore-Tanner & Associates said the redesigned Lansdowne Park is set to become one of the most high traffic areas in the city. He estimates that as many as four million people will pass by the location annually and be exposed to the TD logo and branding.

McMillan has worked with several large brands with global reach, including Siemens, Hitachi, Intuit and Computer Associates.

Protests from some residents are something McMillan said TD and Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) likely expected going into the deal.

The name Frank Clair elicits an emotional response to the city’s CFL glory days.

However, once the new sports teams start playing at TD Place, any anger from the public will likely simmer, he predicted.

“Frank Clair was super important to this city and the CFL,” said McMillan. “In the short term, there will be negativity. But, long term . . . the more people associate with what’s in the present, the more they will forget about the past.”

OSEG said a monument will be erected outside the stadium to commemorate Frank Clair and his accomplishments at the venue. The planning for the monument will include input from Clair’s daughter, Robin.

I don't buy into what that last article said. I just see this as more corporatization, of big companies trying to buy everything to make money of it.

I don't approve of anything, and while I definitely support the redevelopment (it could have been better done) I don't agree with changing the name, not unless it has something to do with Ottawa (ie. changing some minor street name to reflect something in Ottawa's history).
