I suppose an annual power-wash is cheaper than replacing the exterior (re: Eatons / Sears @ Pacific Centre).

However ....
The exterior of the Arthritis Society building near Oak & Broadway was recently power-washed for the first time in my memory, but the el-cheap-o contractor couldn't be bothered to SCRUB and then WASH the caked-on dirt.
Result: only the areas that could be reached by a window-washer using a rope line hanging from the roof were touched by the pressure washer (barely). The cleaned parts make it obvious how dirty the rest of the building was - and still is.

I agree. It's one of the buildings that has most needed attention due to it's location. I always frowned looking at it.

Do I need to re-ignite my argument for how awnings detract from the beauty of buildings.. or that they're plain hideous?

I don't mind the awning so much. It's the trademarked Vancouver layer of mildew that I find offensive!

So the current red colour of the Ormidale block - that isn't red terra cotta or red stone, it's red paint?

I tend to associate the Romanesque style with that red colour.
i.e. Ontario legislature, etc.

In this case, yes. However....

Not all awnings are created the same, just like buildings.

Some are created to mask the ugliness of buildings.

From Changing City Updates:

Quote:
1155 Thurlow Street

The West End Plan has now been adopted, so new development proposals will start to appear. Here’s a new tower that’s been on the radar for a while, with the rezoning now being submitted. It’s for a site behind St Paul’s hospital and close to Mole Hill that currently has a 1977 church building. The new project, which is a joint Bosa Properties and Central Presbyterian Church proposal, would see a replacement church building with 45 non-market rental housing units and 168 market rental units in a 22 storey building. There’s a tree on the roof, so you can be reasonably certain that the design is by Henriquez Partners Architects (and you’d be correct).

Notice sent around the office:

Quote:

WHEN: Beginning Monday, January 6, 2014 for approximately 4 weeks

WHY: As part of a sewer construction project, the City of Vancouver is planning a full closure of the 700 block of Robson Street beginning on Monday, January 6, 2014.

IMPACT: The closure of the 700 block of Robson Street will also close the entrance to the Pacific Centre parkade at the corner of Robson and Howe Street, and cause potential traffic disruptions in the area. Tenants are encouraged to use the other entrances to the parkade during this time.

I don't recall seeing any pics of the new Hyatt (Regency) sign. There are some really ugly ghost signs from the old logo visible during the day on both sides of the tower.

My iPhone photo, from tonight:

Thanks - didn't even know about it.
The old one was precedent-setting in its day - it was dark lettering during the day, and when it lit at night, it changed to white.
