I don't understand why they don't just periodically take measurements of highway speeds to see what the average flow rate is and adjust accordingly. Many highways could easily get a bump to 110 (99 south of the tunnel and hwy 1 east of the PM).
The province is looking at rural speed limits and making some changes. Hopefully that comes around to looking at ones in urban areas too.

I drove the SFPR last night. What the heck is the DIP between the railroad overpass and Patullo Bridge there for?

The section from Bridgeview west to Grace Road opened yesterday at some point between 2:30 pm when I went to work, and 7:00 pm when I drove out and noticed it was fully open. Drove it Westbound all the way to Nordel then onto River Road (was still closed)... but I sure noticed this...

I think the electronic signage is visible in the bottom left of that picture, so you can see your speed lit up as they write you a ticket

It was mentioned earlier in the thread that the road dips to give more clearance under the railway overpass. It is below the water table there and needed special drainage. The reason why the dip seems to be offset from the railway bridge, I think, is because the road has to come up quickly back to grade for the level crossing to the west.

Speaking of that level crossing, I looked more closely at the Google Maps images of that railway, and I can't see any way that they could have grade-separated that track. That track crosses underneath the railway bridge approach just a short distance away, so it couldn't travel over or under the SFPR.

Maybe the dip is the real reason for the 50 km/h limit (rather than the railway crossing)?
Although other roads have signs that say "dip".

The reason is to scare people into actually slowing down to 60 or 70 (either of which would be safe and eminently more reasonable).

It's an "aspirational" speed limit.

After the big kerfluffle last week with the 104 Ave overpass, today the SFPR was glorious to drive on.

Minus the snow, natch, but still glorious. Up until now, it had been stop-and-go traffic from the Surrey Docks all the way to 103 and Scott Road.

Today? I only had to stop at the lights on 103 Ave. My evening commute home dropped from an hour to 30 mins (Tilbury to Central City).

Instead, it was just a big loop that turned everyone around and sent them back onto Hwy 17... WB.

I have heard from three or four different people who got stuck in that loop to turn around.

They assumed they could exit at 104th, which wasn't true.. Hundreds of cars were lined up for 30 minutes, so obviously it wasn't clear enough.

This morning at the Subury intersection around 8:30-9:00 there were similarly hundreds of vehicles backed up to Nordel Hill (1.5km) .. I heard someone mention the lights were cycling every 5-10 seconds.

I opened it last night, and then this morning I opened the portion along Burns Bog. I did this as freeway edits take a Google employee to approve so I arranged for one to do it as his last thing of today's workday. Directions, however, are another product and will take some time to update. I'm trying to see if I can get it done within a week, but it will likely be tough during Christmas week.

Will the ribbon cutting interrupt traffic?

Also, SFPRconstruction.ca is down right now and the webcam site is down entirely..

Was able to drive on it tonight, both directions. Great road, almost completely devoid of traffic. Was at night, but still, he part through Tannery felt very impressive and big.

The 50 km/h zone felt completely overkill. I can understand why 80 km/h is a bit excessive through there, but 50 km/h is the same as any residential street typically in the Lower Mainland. Easily felt safe to go through there at 70 km/h in a car.

I am wondering if the reason the webcam link for the Gateway Project is down because they are repositioning, adding or deleting cameras.

Anyone know what's going on?

Attempted to drive it eastbound coming up from Point Roberts at 11am this morning, but it was still blocked off. Westbound was running. Maybe just blocked for the opening?

I completely agree with you on the 50 km/h speed limit. Why they went so far as to setup dual-electronic signs both eastbound and westbound indicating your speed and telling you to slow down is beyond me. It seems a little ridiculous to me, slowing down all the way to 50 for that measly dip underneath the railroad overpass.

They are probably concerned about a big rig flying through there at 120km/hour and hitting the rail bridge or the Pattullo.

They should have a CARS 70 / TRUCKS 60 sign.
