They finally succeeded last Tuesday with the official ribbon cutting. Roberts, who is originally from Triton, owns 100 Mary Brown's locations across Canada, in Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and NL.

If his business plan works out, he will open another 100 locations in places like Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary over the next five years. Already, 63 franchise applications have been filed from 10 different countries.

Good for them though! I still miss Mary Brown's since it's not a national franchise.
Living where I do, in the land of immigrants, I have always noticed how popular (seriously) fried chicken is with people from other countries.

The Mary Brown's in Fredericton is a huge disappointment. The place is almost always empty it seems and the food isn't that great, I guess that explains the lack of customers. All the same, it's a god send to have a taste of home every once in a while. Hopefully it does better in Turkey, I love the irony of the news articles too.

And I still say the best Mary Brown's on the go is in the Millbrook Mall in Corner Brook, phenomenal food, not as greasy, fresh taters, etc...

This week's city council agenda lists renovations to 2 Stavanger Drive to include a KFC restaurant. Is this the current Irving gas bar/store? I wonder if the KFC will go into the space where Pizza Hut used to be? If so this is disappointing as I was hoping for a KFC-Taco Bell combo store.

2 Stavanger drive is indeed the Couche-Tard. :-)

A little while ago, before starbucks opened and before anyone I knew, knew themselves (including a manager at another starbucks) a worker at the Irving told me Starbucks was coming to Stavanger drive. She said two locations and knew one was in a store — wasn't sure which — and the other standalone, she didn't know where. The initial question that got her talking was about the empty space in the Irving. She told me that the Irving was getting something back soon in that space where Pizza Hut was, way back when, but couldn't tell me what it was.

I didn't ask how she got this info. Perhaps she has good ears and overheard a convo or perhaps someone blabbed to her while paying for their gas. Sometimes it's a little too easy to get info from people if you're nice. :-D

Of note, I'm still betting on Taco Bell in St. John's soon, 2014ish. Just because it was "KFC" at the agenda doesn't mean it can't be a KFC/Taco Bell combo btw.

I'm pretty certain their still a blank slot on the sign in the Best Buy parking lot, leading me to believe there's a standalone building still slated to go on that lot, assuming in the southwest corner nearest to the intersection. Which might explain why they never put in a much needed north bound exit lane off Stav (to allow for enough space for another building in that corner).

All guess work though.

Taco Bell is garbage.. if you want a chain.. wish for a Chronic Tacos, Chipotle, or even Mucho Burrito.

I can't believe they're opening a Jack Astors in that beautiful space on the waterfront. Some of you have mentioned Earl's, Milestones, etc.. those are so last year.. here on the W(B)est Coast it's all about Craft Beer.. 140 beers on tap, serving locally sourced food.. amazing concept.

Whether you like Jack Astors or not, it's likely gonna be a very popular restaurant and very profitable for the owners of the building. Gotta lease the space. Might as well lease it to someone who is gonna draw in the customers. Especially to those customers who haven't heard of Legros and Motti which is the other restaurant that is going there.

I am sure Taco Bell has it's core customers but really, it's just a crappy fast food restaurant like all the rest.

Jungle Jim's and Shamrock City apply for new locations in Goulds. Though this would be the 4th location for Jungle Jim's, not 2nd as reported by vocm. However it would be the 2nd location for Shamrock City.

Hey now, Craft started in Calgary.

but still, Earls has better food and usually decent beer selection, and I feel it'd be a better choice for that location if it's going to be a chain. Jack Astor's will be alright in that regard anyway.

But... I'd kill for the craft beer revolution to hit St. John's! Not the Craft brand necessarily, but the concept itself.

I believe I saw the same map, it may have posted somewhere on the forums. I also heard that Boston Pizza will be going in 351 Water, that has been discussed here previously. As for Starbucks at the old Rogers location - not sure, but it seems like a good spot and it's been mentioned here before that Starbucks is looking to expand in the city.

Starbucks is supposed to undergo huge expansion in the metro area, I was told by a friend who knows one of the managers.

I was at a starbucks couple of weeks ago at 9am on a week day and it was packed there. So I guess we could use a few more around town for sure.
