HossC -- thank you for introducing me to "Miss Peggy Pender" and Godzilla for your post I had missed. Wondering how my search skills failed finding that or the LAPL photos. Nevertheless, Poinsettias are a whole different breed of plant in black and white, I must say! Loved all those pics guys!

In addition to Gaylord Wilshire's helpful link, you can back up Google Maps in Android as well. The new one lost so much that I needed that I simply couldn't keep it.

The major drawback to this is that you must turn off automatic updates of your apps in order to keep the old Google Maps. Best to do this first, before you reinstall the old version. That means you must individually confirm updates for all of your apps whenever they notify you of newer versions.

After that:
You will need to go to Androiddrawer.com where they have old versions of free Android programs. the last old Google Maps is 6.14.4:

Download the old one to your computer and copy to your Android phone, or download it directly with the phone. Then you need to go to your phone settings and turn off the security restriction that prevents installation of programs from places other than the Google Play store. Then you'll be able to install the older .apk file from your phone's downloads folder. Remember to turn the restriction back on when you're done!

The biggest thing lost in the newer Android app was the My Maps feature, which I use extensively and became completely inaccessible with the new app.

It's a shame that this picture isn't bigger. It shows artist Andreas Roth painting a poinsettia field in Hollywood. There's no date, but he arrived in the US in 1932 and died in 1949.

Located on the northeast corner of Effie Street and Paducah Street was the Palo Verde Elementary School. In the late 1950's, the roof was removed from the school and the interior was filled with dirt. The entire valley floor along Effie Street and cross streets were land filled. This area is now beneath a parking lot of Dodger Stadium. By the time the "Highway Patrol" program (ZIV) filmed there, most of the housing had already been removed because of a 1949 U.S. law which allowed communities to be rezoned and affordable housing erected. The area was condemned and housing removed as people sold, moved, or were evicted. A few years later, a new mayor of L.A. decided not to go forward with the redevelopment of the area. Then the Dodgers baseball team came and the city gave/sold them the area that was already condemned. The final buildings were removed, except for the school, and the area filled with dirt.

We see the nun's laundry hanging by the second floor door. Scandal!

I found a little info on Palo Verde Elementary while searching for more info on the convent building. If the school was on the northeast corner, I guess it's pretty safe to assume that the convent was on the northwest corner? Since nothing south of Effie Street had been developed on the 1921 map posted by HossC.

Using Historical Aerials, the 1952 map shows no building on the northwest corner. However, on the south side of Effie where Paducah connects with it, there is a large building which could be it.

I came across this hospital picture last week when we were looking at osteopathic hospitals and sanitaria, but I've only just got around to locating it. USC date the picture as 1939, but the title only says "Hospital". A quick Google, and I found it was St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica.

The hospital was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Picture and text from www.ngdc.noaa.gov:

"Damage to St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. Note X- shaped cracks, particularly in second floor walls between windows. Shear failure occurred in the second story piers and walls. This damage significantly weakened the structure and forced the evacuation of the hospital."

One wing had to be demolished after the earthquake, but the original building seems to have survived until around 2004 (this aerial is from 2003).
