Seattle TBC is stuck

Seattle’s tunnel-boring machine became stuck underground Friday, and still wasn’t moving as of Monday.
“We are waiting to see what the obstruction is,” Kadeena Yerken, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Transportation, said at 4 p.m. Monday. “Right now, Seattle Tunnel Partners is doing their homework and figuring out what is the best path forward.”
The tunneling machine, which is boring a 1.7-mile traffic tunnel under Seattle, has so far gone just over 1,000 feet, or about one-tenth of its journey. The machine is often referred to as “Bertha.”

Hopefully this doesn't happen to the Evergreen line, though this seems to happen quite often to TBM's. It also happened at the Seymour-Capilano tunnel.

The Seattle TBM is digging through a lot of clay. Something may have built up to the point of grinding the TBM to a halt.

The Seattle tunnel is only 60ft deep where it got stuck, they are thinking it is likely a large historic piece of metal that got missed with the exploratory shafts. Something that would be unlikely in the Evergreen tunnel.

google "Gotthard Base Tunnel" to read about their TBM getting stuck for months. They were just starting the tunnels, and it was thought most of the TBM would have to be dismantled to be removed & the incomplete tunnel abandoned.

However, the ingenious euro engineers figured out a way round the problem.

If I recall correctly, they had to send in a second TBM to dig around so they could get rid of the nasty material blocking the main one. Not a cheap solution.

Hmm, looks like there's no options to upload photos from a hard drive. I guess you will all need to use your imagination regarding the Bertha tour pictures I have.

I'm thinking it's a buried ship from in-fill.

Thanks Hollywood.

Mods: feel free to move these to the correct location. I couldn't readily find the SR 99 Project on the Seattle sub-forums.

Good example - that's a steel box girder - I'll bet the SkyBridge approach is the longest span on the system.
With the different materials, the height/thickness of the guideway will change a lot and look a bit odd.
The concrete segment looks thin, the steel box will look thick.

It'll be the strangest looking piece of the whole train network.

The first column on North Road looks crazy! I was driving and couldn't grab a picture of it unfortunately, but it's a massive one given the height involved.

I had read that the "Gotthard Base Tunnel" was actually a pair of tunnels so train traffic could flow un-interrupted in both directions. The first tunnel's TBM got stuck, so the second tunnel's TBM was used to 'creep forward' and constantly monitor for the same rock faults that caused the first TBM to get stuck. Once the 2nd TBM was roughly parallel to the stuck TBM and the probes found the same rock fault, it was backed off so a cavern could be built between the two tunnels.

When the cavern reached the cutterhead of the stuck TBM, they were able to inject concrete into the loose shearface to make it a solid block that the first TBM could then grind through.

With the first TBM digging again, the second TBM was restarted to continue its tunnel.

Just wanted to share an amazing photo from the new Alaska Viaduct replacement tunnel:

Looking forward to seeing the Evergreen tunnel come together.

Inspirational photo of Bertha's capacities as a TBM.
That's bigger than the Evergreen Line TBM, surely.
Could a "Bertha" be useful elsewhere in Vancouver too?
