Nice Mere video Rypinion. Good for them. I would love to see more Wpg buildings properly lit. I still find it amazing that even the Mint is dark at night.

I agree. I remember seeing proposed photos for a downtown lighting plan, mainly the buildings on portage I think, a few years ago. Certain buildings being lit at nite, in the Exchange District especially, would make for a more lively atmosphere.

I think someone mentioned this before. But the Mint replaced all the windows this past summer. Looks great! Some of the old ones were faded and some replaced. Didn't look very nice. Now they're all uniform, looks so much better!

Residential highrise planned next to rapid-transit hub

THE city's rapid-transit station east of Donald Street could be getting a new highrise neighbour.

MMP Developments and Globe General Agencies plan to build a new 19-storey apartment block on a long-vacant parcel of land on Stradbrook Avenue adjacent to the Harkness station.

I hate that community committee meetings are almost always tuesdays after work... I'm busy every tuesday.

I really wanted to see renderings of this, does anyone know what they had at the meeting?

Great column, vike. I didn't know that a local Winnipeg architect was behind the design of that project... that makes me want to see it rise all the more.

It's disappointing to see all of the vocal opposition to this project. Winnipeg gets so few of these significant urban developments proposed in the first place, and every time one gets proposed it seems as though there is a long queue of people doing whatever they can to stop it. On one hand people criticize Winnipeg for not changing and growing like other cities, but on the other there is a NIMBY chorus that attempts to block everything that comes down the pike.

I could understand the opposition if this meant demolishing the pumphouse to make way for a new skyscraper. But in this case the project will actually help to preserve it... that seems like a win-win to me.

This is my prediction on what's going to happen in the PumpHouse situation.

The Height variance will not be approved for the 24 storey,mixed use commercial/apartment complex which would have maintained the inner workings/structure and historical value of the type II heritage designated building.

The developers will back out and it will have been 28 years where this building has sat vacant and deteriorating, with some of it's inner mechanisms already moved some time ago.

It will be 2017-2018 before we even here a sniff about this site again.
So it's a lose/lose situation.

Based on past practice in this city, I'd say that your prediction could turn out to be startlingly accurate.

Was there any community consultation done before this went to council? that's the biggest problem I have with this situation. I think this is probably the last chance to save the building from demolition and I'm worried this team of locals didn't even do their due diligence and get some support or at least dialogue with area residents. I'm not saying it would have changed anyone's mind about building a 24 storey tower there, but they could at least present the business case.

the design of the tower is also pretty gross from what I've seen so far.

Not sure we can pin the possible failure of this proposal squarely on the back of Nimby's entirely.

If a developer is truly serious about getting a high profile project such as this off the ground - PR work is essential. Especially if the project will be required to obtain significant variances.

This sort of project should never be attempted to be pushed through without some sort of community consultation happening first. Long before splashy renders are released to the general public.

If community consultation didn't happen in this case (and I don't think it did, although correct me if I am wrong) the relationship between this developer, this project and the surrounding citizens is effectively poisoned, and future any co-operation between the two groups has very little hope of occurring.

I have seen this happen in a few projects we have worked on here.

they have done community consultation, but it was to show them the plan, not involve them in coming up with it....

they have also gotten many of the organizations on side...heritage Winnipeg, the planning department etc.
