^^ Beams or rebar? Seems early for putting up beams, don't they need to pour the foundation first? We already spotted rebar a couple weeks ago.

Wow, that's cool. So those square forms we saw earlier were for column bases. Look how small the workers are compared to the size of those columns. Thanks for the photo.

Is that white and orange boom laying on the ground for another crawler crane, or is that for the tower crane?

I love how now that this thread is in with the other UC supertalls, it's getting scrutiny from others, specifically our slightly bitter neighbors to the north. No matter what...its a spectacular building and it will make its mark.
I think the base of the main tower will be well underway by the time the huge concrete pour next year.

I know where I will be staying the next time I visit LA (not planning on it for a few years so this should be done by then). And I have to admit, I was wrong about this building. I jumped the — and criticized it before we had final plans which is something I commonly rebuke others for doing on this forum. Sorry LA! Can't wait to swim on the rooftop pools.

The Facebook page finally posted a new pic. But given this page's history, it's probably several days old.

Seems to me they are going to need at least one more tower crane.

Thanks for the photos.

Is the plan here to pour the concrete thick enough to almost reach the top of those steel columns?

That is what I was thinking. Between now and the big pour there should be alot of rebar going in.

Always fun to hear what you all are speculating is going to happen, how many tower cranes there will be, how old the posted photos may be etc. To ease a little of the wondering, I will say that I think there will be four tower cranes.

Concrete will fully encase the columns shown.

So, instead of piling down to bedrock, they are basically making their own slab of bedrock.

Fascinating.

This older photo shows the future column locations in the dirt. Did they drill them down to bedrock.

Go to page 50 and you'll see the first photo of those footings starting to be formed on the 16th of November, and by the 19th they were all in place and no drills in any photos of the site during those few days. There were some pile drivers on the site a couple weeks before that, but they were just setting the retaining wall around the tower footprint before the foundation hole was even dug. Maybe they drove a pile down in each footing location, but I don't see any photos of that happening. Think I remember seeing only one drill on the site, and that was way back in September or early October, and in one of the other corners of the site, not in the tower footprint.

That thing that skyscrapers must have fundations down to bedrock is actually some kind of myth, skyscrapers that can use fundations directly to bedrock are the exception, most of them can't, since in most areas of the earth, bedrock is very deep.

In the case of Los Angeles, the whole Los Angeles Basin used to have many oil fields (in some of them they are still extracting oil) The presence of oil fields, indicates that the terrain has a very deep layer of sediments, with the deposits of oil being of organic material trapped between layers of sediments. So the the layer of sediments is very deep, much deeper than this building is tall, hence, they must use a form of fundation other than going to bedrock.
